Veterans Day Assembly 2007

For the first time the year, the entire school was together, in the gymnasium, for a remembrance and thanks to our Veterans who have served this country honorably. It was great to see the Freshmen class, which came by bus from the Academy School downtown. It was heartwarming to have four local veterans, three who survived prison camps, being honored guests today. They are Ed Oullette, Peter Belitsos, and Gus Belitsos. The fourth veteran, Walter Brown, was one of the few survivors of his torpedoed ship during World War II.

Mr. Smith, on piano, led the chorus in some beautiful and patriotic songs. Johnny Long, Senior Class President emceed the event. Emily Pring, spoke about the history of Veteran's Day. Jackie Batre introduced our honored guests. Alex Ritterhaus spoke of the ordeals of Walter Brown.  State Representatives Mark Falzone and Robert Fenell   plus Senator Tom McGee's office introduced successful legislation that now makes the date of December 24th in Massachusetts  "USS Leopoldville Remembrance Day".

Lynn State Representative Robert Fenell spoke of the legislative bill to make December 24th a Day of Remembrance of the sinking of theUSS Leopoldville, the ship that Walter Brown served on.

Principal White gave some sincere closing remarks.
