Lynn Summer Jobs Profile
2008The city is working to expand its summer jobs program and keep teenagers off the streets and away from the lure of youth gangs.
The program will run eight weeks this summer from June 30 to Aug. 22 with a signup on June 3 from noon to 8 p.m. in the City Hall lobby.
All Lynn residents age 16-21 who are interested in working are eligible to sign up for an opportunity to work for $8 to $8.50 an hour. Some participating businesses pay a higher hourly rate.
Thirty local firms worked with the city's two economic development agencies last year to hire 150 teens.
About 75 youth worked in the private sector, with another 75 working for city agencies, including City Hall, the School department, Lynn Public Library and the DPW.
Straight Ahead Ministries, Inc. and the organizations that provide training, counseling and jobs for youth urged businesses this week to find jobs or mentoring opportunities this summer for local teens. They said successful efforts by the Lynn police to keep teens occupied at night and summer work opportunities reduced gang violence in 2006 and 2007.
"Last summer all of our kids were employed," said Straight Ahead Pastor Claire Sullivan.
Under the city program, a private business, public agency or municipal department pays half the salary of the youth worker, while the other half is covered by federal and state grants administered by the city Office of Economic & Community Development.

The early bird gets the worm, the qualified applicant who makes the earlier contact gets the job. If you are looking for a summer job, don't wait.
