The Student Study Team is an interdisciplinary group of educators, which meets daily to discuss students who are having difficulties in the classroom.  Gene Constantino is chair of the team, which consists of six other members:  Amanda Curtis, Julianne Cushing, Bryant Dube, Jill Guerriero, Christopher Hayward, and Christine Lander.  An outside consultant, such as the nurse or the school resource officer may be invited to attend

The first step in the process is for a school staff member or a parent to refer a student to the team by filling out the referral form.  A student is usually referred because of concerns regarding academic, social, or behavioral issues.  The referring person may be looking for direct instructional strategies for working with that student.  At least three meetings will be conducted and a determination as to the best course of action will be made.

The purpose of the first meeting is to determine if the referral is appropriate for the team.  Once the main concern is established, then the team determines what data need to be gathered. This may involve reading files, talking to other teachers, counselors, vice principals, or actually observing the student in various settings.

At the second team meeting, the teachers share the data they have gathered.  From this information, the team will determine in what direction it will proceed.  The student will be invited to meet with the team to discuss the issue.  If necessary, the parent will be notified and invited to be part of the process.  The team will recommend strategies to all concerned and teachers will be asked to assess the effectiveness of the recommendations.  A date for a follow-up session will be determined based upon the recommendation of the team.

The third meeting is to analyze the effectiveness of the intervention.  If the intervention is working, then it will be decided whether a follow-up meeting is needed.  If the intervention is not working, then the process might begin once again, or a referral to Special Education or the 504 Team may be made.
