Soccer Balls 2010

For the last few weeks around Classical, everyone's been talking about, and walking around with, soccer balls. What's going on ??

Well, they are not real soccer balls but custom-designed, multi-faceted,  personalized zippohedrons, or something like that.

In a true Classical tradition, these hand-made soccer balls are the Math Department's way of showing students the geometry and makeup of objects with varied surfaces. Each Geometry student in the school constructed a soccer ball using 12 regular pentagons and 20 regular hexagons. Students were allowed to use any type of materials and styling to build their ball.

The Classical faculty voted on the top 30 yesterday and we are all anxiously awaiting the results. They were very impressed with the originality of many of the zippohedrons. The top 3 winners will be awarded prizes.
