As Prom Nears, it's  Dress for Success in Lynn

LYNN - Choosing the right gown and accessories for the prom can be a stressful experience — never mind finding a date.

So the pressure is on as seniors at Lynn Classical High School scramble to make sure everything is just right for their big night on May 24 at the Hyatt Regency in Boston.

With her dress picked out, hairstyle chosen and a limo set to take her and 13 of her friends to the prom, senior Tiffany Raymond said she is ready to go.

“I got my dress at The Ultimate (Peabody) and it is a copper-colored halter dress that is tight and beaded,” she said. “Last year for the junior prom I had a loose and flowing dress, so I wanted to get the opposite this year.”

Opting for the same halter-top theme, senior Christine Meyers said she chose a multi-colored gown at the Ultimate as well.

“It’s purple, light blue and turquoise,” she said. My parents wanted me to get a big puffy dress, but I said they would see it after I bought it!”

However, it hasn’t been an easy time according to senior Melinda Depina, who said she has her heart set on finding a red dress for the prom, but has yet to find one that matches her style.

“I have been having a hard time finding a dress that I like,” Depina said. “So far I’ve been to some stores in Brockton and Saugus and I didn’t have any luck…and I need a date!”

Senior Carlos Cespedes said he is debating between an all white or a brightly colored tuxedo, depending on the color of his date’s dress.

“I definitely want a top hat and a cane,” he said with a smile. “I’m going to pick it up this weekend at Mr. Tux.”

Wincing at the estimated cost of $140 to rent the tuxedo, Cespedes admitted that it’s cheaper for boys to attend a prom as opposed to what the girls have to pay.

“My dress cost almost $300 and I had to have it tailored,” Raymond exclaimed.

Meyers said she paid just about the same amount as Raymond and that doesn’t include accessories.

Aside from the dress, prom hairstyles are just as important as the accessories and of course, the date.

After pouring through magazines and online sites, Meyers said she decided on an elaborate hairstyle including braids and curls.

“It’s a different type of style but it’s going to look great,” she said.

When asked if she was going to test-drive the style first, she said she would just get it done the day of the dance.

Depina agreed with Meyers.

“I think it’s a jinx if you pick out the style ahead of time and try it out, because it always ends up looking bad the day of the event,” she said.

Cespedes said he plans to devote a good chunk of the morning to primping.

“I’ll get groomed for a good two hours before the prom,” he quipped.
