Lynn Classical High School Environmental Club
What Carbon Footprint?
With an overwhelming response, the Environmental Club, spearheaded by Marine Biology teacher Mr. Winchester, had its first meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. The meeting was held in the auditorium since the initial sign-up sheet had over 200 names of interested students. Over 50 attended the meeting, all offering great suggestions and a supreme concern for the environment. The club was broken down into three major focus areas: Recycling, Energy Efficiency, and Nature Conservation.
The recycling group is to focus on the continued recycling program at the school: paper, plastic, etc. While the school continues its vigilance with its paper recycling, plastic bottles remain a problem. With all the water and juice being sold in the café, there should be definite bins for plastic bottles. It was even suggested that the school be a local recycling hub for the community, as recycling bins are not always available to local residents, and the pick-up is only biweekly.
The Energy Efficiency group will focus on reducing the amount of wasted energy in the building, as well as brainstorming further ways to conserve. Lights, TVs, and computers left on all day and night is one issue the students plan to address. Also, the possibility of alternate energy sources was discussed: Solar power? Energy-saving light bulbs? Etc. The students brainstormed ideas that would not only conserve energy, but in the long term, perhaps money as well.
The Nature Conservation group plans to look outside of the building, spreading its wings into the community. There was discussion of general community pick up, and the observation and acknowledgment of our local resources. The students suggested the possibility of setting up nature walks along Lynn Classical Biology students’ beloved Salt Marsh, using placards to identify local wildlife for the entire Greater Lynn community to enjoy. The same is true of Lynn Woods—the second largest municipal park in the United States. Also, discussion was held about aiding in the preservation of the historic Lynn Waterfront.
The over-arching idea of Global Warming and Climate change, fresh on our minds because of the recent ACES Global Warming assembly, was also discussed, but boiled down to a local, tangible level. The major idea was that if we contribute on these levels, however small they might seem, we will be doing our part to help the environment, and ultimately the world as we know it. To see such an outpouring of student interest and concern is not only heartwarming, but inspiring. The student body of Lynn Classical High School is truly concerned. These students are the future of our city, of our country, of our world. Witnessing this passionate display of student activism once again affirms that this student body is not only the best in the city, but the best leaders of tomorrow.
Drama Club
This year the actions of the drama club will be very ambitious.
Mrs. Tolley and Mrs. Weiss have teamed up to be advisors. The drama club is not only for actors and singers, but for those interested in crew, which includes lighting, sound, set building, costume making, and stage crew. For this year they have the ambitious goal of putting together a short, one act play as well as a full production.
This will be the first full production that the Classical drama club has been able to put on in years. However, a lot of hard work will be needed to make this happen. The drama club will meet every Thursday for an hour and as the production progresses, more rehearsal time will be added. Not only must the students work hard at putting together the plays, but they must work to raise funds.
Come by and support the drama club through participating in fundraisers or just helping out! There is a place for all interested!
BREAK DANCERS WANTED!
Story by Brianda Agramonte. Photos by Cinda Danh.

The Break Dancing crew at Lynn Classical High School walk among us in the halls. These dedicated, strong, and energetic individuals dance together not just as a team or crew, but as a family. Although these less than reserved dancing students walk on their hands shamelessly, they don’t do it for the “oos and ahhs” or the applause- they do it for the love of break dancing.
Sararith Roeung, Sharony Son, Nathan Neff, Jesse Collymore, Chris Lazcono, and Johnny Pham make up the Break Dancing Club. Under the supervision of Mr. Harutunian, the majority of the break dancing team meet every Thursday at the Asian American Club, then head downstairs to the café to dance. These individuals are continuing the legacy of past break dancing groups like the Bai-Cha Breakers. This group was around in the 90s and spread their dancing knack onto this generations group.
As the 2008-2009 school year slowly leaves, so will our Senior Break Dancers. Being that the current small yet fiery group consists of 4 Seniors ( 6 Breakers in total), the Break Dancing Club needs to recruit some future Break Dancers for Lynn Classical to keep the legacy alive. They are looking for some fresh, committed, dedicated, and “no-joke” new people to make up the Break Dancing team.
No experience is necessary. Don’t let this all boy group fool you--girls are welcome!! Here, they will teach you the basics of not only break dancing, but all sorts of dancing; like popping, and even forms of acrobatics. Experienced Seniors like Sharony and Nathan will definitely be visiting the school after high school to watch how their top rookie Johnny is improving, and how he teaches younger Break Dancing beginners. So, LCHS students and students of the future, don’t be afraid to stop by and see what these talented dancers are made of--who knows, maybe you’ll be the next Breaker sliding across the gym floor getting the whole of Classical going wild !!
The Art Club
March is National Art Month, so the Rampage paid the Art Club a visit, to see what Classical's student artists are currently creating. The Art Club meets on Thursday afterschool, in the Art Room, until 6pm. Photos by Caitlin Mallett.
