  Who Attends a Mediation Session?

The participants in the session are the mediators, the child, parents or guardian and any others the parties agree should be present because of their essential role in the conflict and resolution of issues. A coordinator hosts the session but doesn’t sit in on the mediation.

  Who are the Mediators?

The mediators come from all walks of life and backgrounds and are committed to working with families. They are members of North Shore Community Mediation (NSCM) and have completed a basic mediation training, an apprenticeship, advanced Parent/Child Mediation training and are experienced volunteer mediators.

Where and When are Mediations Held?

Mediation sessions are held on the North Shore and Cape Ann at locations and times, which are convenient for the family members. Handicapped access is available upon request.

How Long is a Mediation Session?

Most mediation sessions last between one and three hours. The family members determine the length of a session and may request more than one session to properly address their needs.

Is a Written Agreement the Goal of Mediation?

It is often helpful at the conclusion of mediation for participants to write statements of accomplishments and commitments to take home and which can be shared with referral sources. However, the mediation process can produce tangible, improved relationships with or without a written document.

  Who Coordinates Case Referrals?

A case coordinator stays closely involved with the case, family and referral agent from referral to case closure.

What is the Cost of Mediation?

NSCM charges a family $50 per session if the case is not referred by the courts. However, no family will be denied mediation services if unable to pay.
