Saving a Dying Species...

Mr. Winchester, above, is our Marine Biology teacher at Classical High School. He has brought Environmental Science right into his classroom, raising almost-extinct turtle hatchlings for return to their habitat. We are honored and appreciative to have such a great mentor as Mr. Winchester in our school. (He also works with the New England Aquarium.)

Last Friday we had a special Guest Speaker, Bryan Windmiller, who is the scientist in charge of the Massachusetts Great Meadows Blanding's Turtle Conservation Project. This assembly, which the Environmental Club, the Science Club and the Science Dept. hosted,  filled the auditorium. The Blanding Turtle, local to our area, is in danger of extinction.

The talk was about 40 minutes with photos and data about the history of the project that we are now a part of...hopefully for years to come.

We are currently housing 6 of our original 10 hatchlings, (4 went to other schools near Concord).  We have stepped in to replace the participation of the New England Aquarium who could not participate in the program this year. We hope to send them back to their natural habitat early next year.
