DO YOU WANT TO PLAY BASEBALL IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC THIS SUMMER?
My name is Frankie Gonzalez and I work for the Boston Red
Sox. I am recruiting teenagers for the Red Sox Foundation’s Lindos Sueños
program and would like to see some applications from your school. Would you mind
sharing this with your students, baseball coach, Spanish teacher and/or anyone
else you think may be interested in the program?
Please see below for more information about the program.
The Program:
Lindos Sueños (Beautiful Dreams) is a summer program for high school boys
operated by the Red Sox Foundation. For two weeks in the summer, 12 teens from
the Boston area fly to the Dominican Republic to work and play with 12 Dominican
teens. In the mornings, they engage in community service building important
infrastructure like baseball fields, daycare centers, and water towers in the
impoverished Dominican towns. In the afternoons, they play baseball, training
under the expert tutelage of Jesus Alou, baseball legend and director of the Red
Sox Dominican Baseball Academy. The program is free to participants, and travel,
lodging and accommodations are all provided.
The Application:
Applicants must be male, of any nationality, between the ages of 15 and 18,
maintain good grades (B average), have studied two years of Spanish or
equivalent, and have a passion for playing baseball. Kids who meet these
criteria, should complete and submit an application.
The application deadline is on February 28th (please let me know if you need
more time).

Lindos Sueños
2009
Application
Since its inception in 2004, the Lindos Sueños (“Beautiful Dreams”) Program has brought a total of 120 teenage boys from varying backgrounds together through baseball and community service. The program is a unifier of teens of all backgrounds, a vehicle for learning about different cultures, and a catalyst for community service. This year, the program will take place in late July or early August, 2009.
For two weeks in the summer, teens from the Boston area fly to the Dominican Republic to play baseball every afternoon with Dominican teens. They train under the expert tutelage of Jesus Alou, baseball legend and director of the Red Sox Dominican Baseball Academy. Each morning the boys engage in community service. In the first three years, they built a baseball field, daycare, and water tower in the impoverished village of El Mamón. In 2007, the group renovated a baseball field in David Ortiz’s hometown of Haina. Last year, the teens helped build a baseball field at an orphanage in San Pedro de Macoris.
The
impact of the Lindos Sueños Program is directly related to the maturity,
responsibility, and dedication of its participants.
All of the program’s participants, Dominican and American, are expected
to contribute a great deal to the program and the community; it is our hope that
they gain a lot from this unique opportunity as well.
If you would like to be considered for participation in the Lindos Sueños Program, please complete the following application and submit by email to lindos.suenos@redsox.com or fax it to (617) 849-5798, no later than Saturday, February 28, 2009 (the earlier the better). Expect that you will be contacted shortly thereafter to participate in the interview process.
Requirements:
Applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA (for schools that do not calculate GPA, the applicant must have at least a “B” average). Applicants must have experience playing baseball and a knowledge of and passion for the game. Additionally, participants should have 2+ academic years of the Spanish language or equivalent and be between 15 – 18 years old.
