National Honor Society Induction 5/28/09
Story by Larry Cheung
Every year, a group of hard working diligent students is accepted to the prestigious Mary Bemis Chapter of the National Honor Society.
Last night, at the NHS induction ceremony in Breed Middle School, every parent whose son or daughter was accepted had the opportunity to look at just how much their children have accomplished in their high school career. I would like to briefly reflect on the lives of many students at Lynn Classical and how it is a major accomplishment for them if they qualified for the National Honor Society.
It is time to face the facts: we as students in Lynn sometimes do not have as many ample opportunities as do the students from the more affluent communities such as Swampscott or Marblehead. But, in spite of this statement, seeing how so many students qualified for this year’s entrance to the National Honor Society gives us a clear perception of how much determination many Classical students have. It is a fact that the average Lynn high school student lives in a less affluent family than does a Swampscott high school student. But if we take the hardships that many Lynn Classical students endure into consideration, we will clearly see that they are an inspirational group, a group that does not let disadvantages dampen their spirits.
We, the students at Lynn Classical, have had to face tremendous obstacles in the past 2 years. Because of the sinking school, classrooms in the first floor have had to be shut down, the library has had to be reconstructed, and many activities have had to have been canceled. But at last night’s ceremony, the parents, the students, and the faculty came together and vowed to not let any obstacles obstruct our path to success.
The students at Lynn Classical are a genuine group, students who face and overcome daunting obstacles everyday. We should continue to strive for improvement, and continue to pursue what we know we can accomplish. If we can do so, then I, a student a Lynn Classical, am certain that there will be many opportunities for us to succeed in the future.
