LYNN -- In a poignant evening, the Lynn English girls soccer team concluded its season with a 1-0 win over Classical at Manning Field on Thursday.

Before the game, Classical coach
Marcy Durgin was honored by her players because she is leaving coaching to be married in December and move to Chicago.

"A Durgin has coached or taught every year since the mid- '50s," Durgin said. "This now comes to an end."

Durgin was the assistant coach for eight years and the head coach of the Rams for four years.

The lone player honored was the only senior on the Rams team,
Kelly Deveney, who had moved with her family last spring to Arkansas because her father's company had made the move.

Deveney wanted to finish her high school career with the classmates with whom she grew up. She returned in September to live with her aunt and uncle and is finishing her high school career as a Ram. She is one of the captains of the soccer team and is also a captain of the Classical girls ice hockey team.

Her parents flew up from Arkansas to see her last game as the Classical sweeper. She will stay in Lynn until she graduates next June.

The first half was a combination of great goaltending by both keepers, Brittany Goulet from English and
Mackenzie Coppinger from Classical. Both teams also have excellent sweepers who control the play in front of the net. Junior Shawna Henry from English is the textbook sweeper, covering everything from sideline to sideline, while Classical's Deveney stays more to the middle of the area.

During the first half, neither team had control of the midfield. As a result the ball kept moving from one end to the other. The half ended with no score. The second half had just started when English struck for the only goal of the game. Shannon Kidney carried the ball across midfield, and when she was in front of the English bench, she put a 35-yard through ball to the left wing, where Megan Forti picked up the pass behind the Ram right defender and went in alone on Coppinger, the Ram keeper.

As Coppinger came off the line to cut down the angle, Forti pulled the trigger on the shot and beat Coppinger to the top left corner of the net. It was only fitting that Forti scored the last and winning goal of her career at English. She sat out all of her junior year after knee surgery. She spent her entire junior year as scorekeeper and unofficial assistant coach to head coach Ed McNeil.

English senior keeper Goulet will be missed next year as she picked up her sixth shutout of the year and the 21st of her varsity career.

This was the final game of the season for both Classical and English.

Daily Item Roundup

Peabody 7, Classical 1

At Peabody, Emily Manoogian had a goal and two assists as the Tanners remained undefeated (14-0-1). Manoogian, who has 37 points, hit the 100 career-point milestone in Peabody's last game against Beverly.

Manoogian had plenty of help from her friends on Tuesday. Hayley Dowd, who was named the Northeastern Conference North Most Valuable Player, scored, as did Victoria DiGiacomo, Katerina Rocha, Meghan Fay (first varsity goal), Amanda Nihan and Kirsten Nihan.

Junior
Christine Francois scored on a free kick for Classical's goal. Mackenzie Coppinger played well in net and freshman Chelsey Martin was solid in the midfield. Classical plays English Thursday at 7 p.m. at Manning Field.

Classical 2, Everett 2

At Everett, junior captain Brianna Capone scored both goals for the Rams (1-15-1) who saw the hosts fight back with just over a minute to go to steal a point.

"We're disappointed the came back in the last minute to tie. But it was a very competitive game for us," Classical coach Marcy Durgin said.

Christine Francois and Jennie Erekson provided the assists on Capone's goals.

Revere 3, Classical 0

At Manning Field, Classical would wake up when it was too late. Revere had a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half and would never look back. Classical's
Kelly Deveney had a strong game for the defense.

"It was a struggle in the first half," Classical coach
Marcy Durgin said. "In the second half, we played much better, not giving up a goal."

Classical plays Everett Saturday.

Beverly 4, Classical 0

At Beverly Airport Field, the Panthers (6-7) came out flying in the first half with Monica Casola scoring three goals and Bridget Leahy the other to take a 4-0 lead at the break. Casola and Leahy each had one assist. Hayley Lorge picked up the shutout.

The Rams  played a solid second half led by sweeper
Kelly Deveney. Classical plays Revere today at Manning Field.

Salem 2, Classical 0

At Manning Field, Lauren Schaejbe scored on a penalty kick 13 minutes into the game and it turned out to be all the offense the Witches (5-5-3) would need. Jasmine Bryant added an insurance tally in the second half with Ashley Maccario picking up the assist. Emma Titus and Lindsay Trammell combined for the shutout.

Despite the loss, Classical coach
Marcy Durgin was very happy with the way her team played.

"We played a great game tonight," Durgin said, citing strong play from freshman
Chelsey Martin on defense, Gabby Galeazzi at halfback and Mackenzie Coppinger in net.

Gloucester 3, Classical 1

At Gloucester, an early deficit was too much for the Rams to overcome. Classical's Christine Francois scored the lone goal at the end of the first half. The score was 3-1 at the half, and would stay that way for the rest of the game.  Playing well for Classical were Brianna Capone, Christine Francois, and Kelly Deveney. Classical plays Salem Monday.

Winthrop 2, Classical 0

At Manning Field, Nicole Black scored with about five seconds left in the first half with the assist going to Haley Benson. The Vikings (3-8) added some insurance about 15 minutes into the second half on a Benson goal (Black assist). Johnna Fisher was in net for Winthrop. The Vikings had 17 first-half shots.

Keeper
Mackenzie Coppinger and midfielder Brianna Capone played well for the Rams.

Danvers 5, Classical 0

At Manning Field, Brittany Russo and Corey Persson had two goals each and Joanna Zecha had one for the Falcons, who remain undefeated at 8-0-1. Classical is 1-10.

Swampscott Wins over Classical

At Swampscott, Tess Gorman and Merry Ball had two goals each and freshman Erin Cassidy had four assists for the Big Blue (5-1-1). Classical coach Marcy Durgin said her team (1-9) will put this game behind it and look ahead to the rest of the season.

Marblehead's offense finds spark against Classical

By Matthew Roy / For The Item

Marblehead coach Sam Yawson spent the last two days in practice preaching to his team about shooting the ball and the results that can come from it. Evidently, the Magicians heeded their coach's advice as they rolled to a 6-0 win over Classical at home on Thursday.

Mary Keroack had a pair of goals and an assist as the Magicians (2-4-2) finally got their offense going. Micelah Adee, Lindsey Cohen, Courtney Daley and Cailin Daley each had one goal for Marblehead.

MacKenzie Coppinger was outstanding in goal for Classical (1-8), stopping 20 shots.

Saugus 4, Classical 0

At Manning Field, the Sachems had four different players score. Alyssa Wilkie and Ashley Aldred made it 2-0 by the half and Lauren Donati and Madison Tomallio added the final two.

For Classical, Mackenzie Coppinger had a good game in net. Kelley Deveney and Christine Francois also had strong games as well.

Classical is 1-7.

Peabody 6, Classical 0

At Manning Field, the Tanners (4-0) kept their perfect record intact with help from Kirsten Nihan, who scored three goals. Taylor Provost (goal), Hayley Dowd (goal, assist) and Victoria Digiacomo (goal) also contributed offensively.

There was a scary moment early in the game when Amanda Nihan was injured in front of the Classical net. Nihan was immobilized for a possible back or neck injury and taken to the hospital by ambulance, but she's doing well, according to Peabody coach Dennis Desroches. Desroches said it appears she may have pinched a nerve or pulled some muscles.

Revere 5, Classical 0

At Revere, Yvonne Rincon had a hat trick to lead the Patriots to victory. Brittany Browne and Marisa Parent also had goals with Melissa Adreani posting the shutout in goal for 2-1 Revere.

Beverly 4, Classical 0

At Manning Field, Beverly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, and it was just too much for the Rams.

While Classical played better in the second half, the Rams could not muster a goal.

"We are still working on playing a complete game," said Classical coach Marcy Durgin, who added that Christine Francois played a strong game.

Classical is now 1-3.

Salem Strong Over Classical Girls 9/15/09

At Bertram Field, the Witches (2-0) had plenty of firepower with Desiree DeLeon and Sarah Felton each scoring two goals and Ashley Maccario and Caitlin Murtaugh collecting a goal and assist each. Emma Titus and Lindsay Trammell split the game in net. Classical falls to 1-2.

The St. Mary's girls get a "fourpeat" as they defeated Lynn Classical, 3-0, Saturday at Manning Field.

The Lynn City Soccer Tournament has been going for four years, and only one school has captured the girls crown every year. This year was no exception.

"We have to rebuild from the goal out," St. Mary's girls coach Jim Foley said before the game. "We lost most of our defenders plus our all-everything, Amanda Webster."

"We have only one senior," Rams coach Marcy Durgin said. "The team has 11 sophomores who were battle-tested last year as freshmen. I feel that this experience will help us as we go into the (Northeastern Conference) schedule."

St Mary's scored three goals in the first 20 minutes. At the 5-minute mark, senior midfielder Courtney Winters opened the scoring with a shot past Classical keeper Mackenzie Coppinger. The assist went to senior striker Michelle Macchione, who passed the ball through two defenders to find Winters unmarked in front of the net.

One minute later, Macchione had the honors and she received a great through ball from Brianna Anderson and scored against Coppinger to the short side. All the scoring was wrapped up in the 19th minute, when Rachel Stueve picked up an errant clearing pass off a defender and scored against Coppinger to the low far side.

Many individual battles sometimes determine how a game goes. Classical sophomore Jennie Erekson, who does a lot of the distributing and a fair share of the scoring, was covered by St. Mary's defender Mikaela Donovan. The other Classical attackers were unable to get the ball to Erekson, and that shut down a major part of the Rams offense. The rest of the game was one of both teams substituting freely in order to give their younger players experience for the upcoming season.

"We played a good game for the last 60 minutes," Durgin said. "The first 20 killed us." She added, "Co-captain Christine Francois played well at defender and co-captain Brianna Capone played well in midfield. We have a few days to get ready for our first league game when we play Salem."

"We did some nice things out there," Foley said. "We are coming together and should be ready for our league season."

St.Mary's and Classical Girls will Meet in Lynn City Final on Saturday

Classical's Erin Walters

By Art McManus / For The Item, September 10, 2009
LYNN -- Both the Classical and St Mary's girls soccer teams pitched a shutout to advance to the girls championship round on Saturday afternoon.

St. Mary's, the three-time defending champion, will try to make it four in a row when it plays Classical in the title game Saturday (1 p.m.). St. Mary's defeated English 2-0 in the second game of the day.

In the opening game, Classical defeated Tech, 5-0, in a game that could have been more lopsided if not for the exceptional play of Tiger keeper Mah Weah Weah, who made more than 20 saves, many of them on the brilliant side. Tech was also hurt by only having 13 players dressed for the game.

"We hope to have more girls come out now that school has started." Coach Kerri Altieri said

The first 20 minutes was an even game mostly played in the midfield. Gradually the superior depth of the Rams forced the Tech defense into turnovers. In the 22nd minute,
Brianna Capone (one of four captains) stole the ball from a Tech defender in the arc, took one dribble to her right and put the ball low left past the keeper and into the net. Six minutes later, Erin Walters made the same move, stealing the ball and firing a lofting high shot that went over the keeper into the top left corner to push the score up to 2-0. Coach Marcy Durgin kept the pressure on Tech by constantly substituting and had fresh players to harass the faltering defense of the Tigers. The half ended with the score 2-0.

The second half was the
Jennie Erekson show as she had a hand in all three goals scored by the Rams. In the 55th minute, Erekson scored with a shot off the right wing that went in under the diving keeper. The assist on the goal went to Brianna Capone. Three minutes later, Erekson set up Erin Walters for her second goal of the game, a short blast from 10 yards out that the keeper had no chance to save. The final goal of the game came in the 63rd minute. The Tech keeper made an outstanding save and the ball deflected to Erekson, who had the whole net to shoot into. She made no mistake and the score went to 5-0.

Classical then emptied the bench and the starters spent the remaining 17 minutes on the bench. Classical has only one senior on a team of 23 players. After the game, Durgin was asked about the experience of her team.

"The sophomores and juniors had a tremendous amount of playing time last year. They're battle tested and play very well in big games," she said.

Tech coach Kerri Altieri was pleased with the effort of her team.

"We gave it everything we had. My team hustled the whole game and this should help us as we go into our regular season," she said.

Tech plays English Saturday in the girls' consolation game at 9 a.m.

The second game looked like a scrimmage with both teams substituting freely during the first half. In the 39th minute of the first half, St Mary's finally broke the ice. A shot by St Mary's was deflected by English keeper Brittany Goulet. Molly Carey fired a shot at the empty net only to have the English sweeper, Shawna Henry, clear the shot off the line. The clear went to Brianna Holmes, who drilled the ball into the low left corner. This put St Mary's on top 1-0.

The second half was an exact duplicate of the first. Both teams continued to substitute and the game went on at a frantic pace with good defense on both sides shutting down good offense. With a minute remaining in the game, the Spartans sealed the victory with the Carey sisters providing the double whammy. Molly Carey centered the ball to Maggie Carey, who one-timed it past Goulet, who had no chance to make a play. The game ended a few seconds later.

"We lost six starters -- our scorers and our entire backfield, including the keeper," St. Mary's coach Jim Foley said. "The kids came together tonight and stepped up when they had to. I was very pleased with their play."

Ed McNeil was also pleased with his team's performance.

"Our defense played very well. The keeper had no chance on either goal. We have to put the ball in the net and we will be OK," he said.

Classical Girls Soccer Team Feeling Optimistic

By Rich Tenorio / The Daily Item, August 28, 2009

The Lynn Classical girls soccer squads struggled last season, but  coach  Marcy Durgin is hopeful for the 2009 campaign.
The team started practice on Thursday, sand the school will  begin the regular season on Sept. 9 in the Lynn City Tournament. Classical plays Tech.

Classical is counting on underclass talent.

Classical coach Marcy Durgin has been part of the Rams program for the past 12 years, eight as an assistant and four as head coach. This season, however, she has seen something unprecedented in her tenure: Her team has only one senior, sweeper and captain Kelly Deveney.

"I've been coaching at Classical for (12) years," Durgin said. "It's never happened. The last two years, I graduated nine seniors each year."

Twelve players, all with varsity experience, return for 2009. The team boasts a deep sophomore class with eight second-year players.

"We had a large freshman class last year," Durgin noted.

There are also three juniors, all assistant captains: midfielder Gabby Galeazzi, defenseman Christine Francois, and Brianna Capone, who the coach said would probably run the middle of the field.

"I'm really looking to the four captains to show some great leadership on the field," Durgin said.

As for the sophomores, they include goalie Mackenzie Coppinger, Jasmine Badr, a defenseman; Katie Cuozzo, who plays defense and midfield; forward Allison Kurpiel; sisters Erin and Kelly Walters, who play offense and defense, respectively; midfielder Stephanie Lopez; and forward Jennie Erekson.

"All eight saw great playing time as freshmen," Durgin said. "They go into the preseason with a lot of experience in their back pocket."

In all, 22 players, including six freshmen, attended the first day of practice at Hood Park, across from the school. The preseason will include a scrimmage against Amesbury. Then comes opening day with the Lynn City Tournament.

"Going into the season, I am extremely pleased with the experience we start with," Durgin said. "I am optimistic that we'll put a few more in the win column.

"We have a lot of speed, and very quick girls, a lot of girls who know the game, who just understand the game."

However, she added, "I definitely lost a few defenders. I'm hoping to fill in these sophomores with four starting positions."

Players from last year who graduated in the spring included three starting captains, Danielle Jesoraldo, Katie Fitzgerald, and Nikki Kourembanos (who is trying out for the Salem State team), plus fellow starter Jillian Adams and a classmate who Durgin called "the surprise of the season," Sochitta Men, "who came out for goalie her senior year and was a huge, huge surprise for me. She never played soccer before; you'd have thought she trained as a goalie her whole life."

And yet the coach is able to make the best of playing with only one senior this year.

"It's good for this year and the future," she said.

English, Classical Girls Play to 0-0 Tie

LYNN -- If you like high-scoring games, this was not the game for you. However, if you wanted to see 22 players give everything they had on the turf of Manning Field, then this was the game for you to watch, as English and Classical played to a scoreless tie.

Both teams had many opportunities to score, only to be shut down by the other team's defense.

Classical now has a record of 1-3-1, while English has a 1-3-2 record. You could not have asked the players to work any harder. Both teams substituted freely.

Ram coach Marcy Durgin was optimistic before the game, saying, "We have practiced well this week and I feel that we have a really good chance of knocking off English."

Ed McNeil, the Bulldog coach, said, "We are coming off a good game against Beverly, and we should be ready for Classical."

When your offense is not clicking, your only hope to score is for the other team's defense to crack. Last night, this did not happen. The goalies and sweepers on both teams were the stars of the evening.

For Classical, keeper Sochitta Men, a senior playing her first year of soccer, was outstanding. Recruited from the basketball team by Durgin, she is getting better with each game she plays. She kept everything neat and tidy in the six-yard box as she cleaned up everything English threw at her.

In front of her, shutting down the English attack before it could get going was sweeper Kelly Devany.

Her clearing kicks to the wings were perfect.

At the other end of the field, English junior keeper Brittany Goulet was pitching her fourth shutout of the season and the fifteenth in her three years as keeper for the Bulldogs. She knows how to play the angles on the shooters, which only comes with experience.

In front of her is the English sweeper, Shawna Henry, who is as good a sweeper as you can find on the North Shore. Her booming high clears kept the Classical strikers at bay.

For a real soccer fan, this was a great game to watch. Even though the final score was 0-0, it was a thrill to be there.

Classical Defeats Pope John in Girls Consolation Game 2-0

By Art McManus / For The Item, September 8, 2008

LYNN -- In the first of four straight games at Manning Field, the Classical girls came to play the game. Coach Marcy Durgin had them all fired up. She said, "We play five games in nine days and we are ready to win our first game of the year." Durgin's words were prescient: Classical defeated Pope John, 2-0, in the consolation game of the Lynn City Soccer Tournament on Saturday.

After losing Tuesday to St. Mary's and tying Revere with a goal in the last minute of the game, the Rams were ready for a win.

From the opening whistle, Classical was all over the Tigers. The ball never came out of the Tigers' end. Every time the Pope John players tried to clear the ball, the Classical defenders fired it back into the area.

At the 10-minute mark, two Classical freshmen teamed up to score the first goal for Classical. Yasmin Badr penetrated into the top right corner of the area and pushed the pass out on the right wing. Jennie Erekson fired the ball from a nearly impossible spot down near the end line, and it beat Tigers keeper Katie Demirdjian and went into the net over her hands.

The best defensive play of the game was in the 31st minute, when a Pope John striker came in alone on Rams keeper Sochitta Men. She came off her line and the Tigers striker shot the ball towards the net. The ball was just about to cross the goal line when sophomore defender Christine Francois cleared it before it went into the net.

Five minutes later, Francois fired a shot on Demirdjian in the Pope John net. The keeper made a great save and the rebound bounced to freshman Erin Walters, who put the rebound in the net. This made the score Classical 2, Pope John 0. The first half ended with the same score.

The second half started with a new keeper in the Classical net. Freshman Mackenzie Coppinger played the net for the entire second half. Classical played a defensive game for the entire half. Neither team had any good opportunities to score and the clock wound down to zero.

Classical came away with its first win of the year and its record stands at 1-1-1. Durgin was pleased with the play of the whole team.

"We hustled the whole game and we were looking for the open players to pass to," she said. "And our defense played better than in the first two games."

The backpack and ball, donated by Neatco, were won by Kelly Deveny for her outstanding play on defense.

Classical 1, Revere 1

At Manning Field, Jennie Erekson scored on a pass from Briana Capone in the 79th minute to earn a point for the Rams (0-1-1) in their first Northeastern Conference game of the season.

Revere's goal came in the 14th minute, but goalkeeper Sochitta Men played flawlessly thereafter. Kelly Deveney played well at multiple positions for Classical, while freshman Erin Walters had a fine debut at right wing.

St. Mary's Girls Defeat Classical 5-0

By Art McManus / For The Item, September 3, 2008

LYNN -- The second game of the Lynn City Soccer Tournament doubleheader on Tuesday at Manning Field featured St Mary's against Lynn Classical. St. Mary's won, 5-0.

Classical will play Pope John at 11 a.m. in the consolation on Saturday and English will match up against St Mary's at 3 p.m. in the championship game.

Classical coach Marcy Durgin is in her fourth season at the helm. When asked about the team's progress during the preseason, she said, "We have 21 players on the team and eight are freshmen. It will take a while to integrate them in with the upperclassmen. We are playing five games in nine days. We should know by then."

Jim Foley, the Spartans' head coach, is in his 10th season. He has a veteran club returning, led by all-everything Amanda Webster, who will attend Santa Clara University next year.

The Classical goalie is Sochitta Men, whom Durgin recruited from the basketball team. She had never played soccer before. She received her baptism of fire in the first minute of the game, when Amy Bozarjian crossed the ball through the area to Courtney Winters, who shot. Men made the save and Winters put in her own rebound. St. Mary's jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

Classical recovered from the quick goal and took the game to the Spartans. The St Mary's defenders, Mikaela Donovan, Briana Marotta, Stephanie Mowry and Bridget Donovan, were able to keep the young and inexperienced Rams away from keeper Megan Brickley.

In the 22nd minute, Kristin Ferrari took a shot. The ball rebounded to Tonianne Gernigla, who scored for the Spartans' second goal. With less than a minute to go in the half, Amanda Webster unleashed a rocket that hit the rear net before anyone could move to stop it. At the half, the score was St Mary's, 3, Classical 0.

The second half was six minutes old when Winters dribbled through the defenders and put it by freshman keeper Mackenzie Coppinger.

Brittany Naumann finished the scoring in the 54th minute. The score was now 5-0. Both coaches emptied their benches for the rest of the game.

Soccer Team Prospects Looking Good

Reprinted from the Daily Item of Lynn

Coach Marcy Durgin's club returns seven starters from a team that suffered through a 1-15-2 season a year ago. But with seven incoming freshmen that have soccer experience, and seven seniors to lead the way, the outlook seems to be positive for the Rams.

"We had 19 come out (Thursday) and four others are coming. That's great for us," Durgin said. "The kids came in in the best shape that I've seen them in many years. They were enthusiastic and energetic and just wouldn't stop running."

Leading the Rams are senior captains Katie Fitzgerald, Nikki Kourembanos and Danielle Jesoraldo. They will be joined by seven incoming freshmen (Jennie Erekson, Kelly Walters, Erin Walters, Katie Cuozzo, Stephanie Lopez, and Allison Kurpiel) along with four sophomores, including three starters.

Juniors Kelly Deveney and Marisa Mezzetti also help give the Rams experience.

"I like the experience we have coming back and I am very pleased with the young kids," Durgin said. "And it was fantastic to see them because of all the trouble we've had with the school in the past couple of years."

Tight Game Against English

By Art McManus / For The Item, Monday, October 29, 2007

LYNN -- In the final regular-season game for the Bulldogs and the Rams, English squeaked out a 1-0 win at Manning Field. Prior to the game, both teams honored their seniors with flowers and balloons. English honored seniors Sheila George and captain Kristi Rebidue, while Classical honored seniors Amanda Stevens, Allison Burggren, Kristina Tsolias, Kelsey Ylonen, Samantha Barker and tri-captains Bryanna Connolly, Courtney Sullivan and Jillian Reddy.

English, under the leadership of coach Ed McNeil, brought a 2-12-3 record into the game. He said, "This is our biggest game. We would like to finish on a high note with a win."

Classical, with Marcy Durgin in charge, had a 1-15-1 record and was looking for a win. She said, "It would be nice to win it for the seniors."

Both sides played excellent soccer with keepers Courtney Sullivan of Classical and Brittany Goulet of English both having outstanding games. The entire game came down to one play with thirty seconds remaining in the first half. Junior Devon Robinson of English intercepted a clearing pass in the Classical area and fired a 25-yard shot that eluded Ram keeper Sullivan to the top far corner. That made the score English 1, Classical 0. This should have been a devastating blow to the Classical players.

However, Durgin worked miracles with the team as it came out for the second half all fired up and ready to play. McNeil, though, was working the same magic with the Bulldogs. The forty minutes of the second half flew by as the Rams struggled to tie up the game and the Bulldogs were hanging on to their slim one-goal lead. The Ram attack was led by Connolly, while stalwart English was led by freshman sweeper Shawna Henry. The second half ended as it had started, with English on top 1-0.

English's record moved to 3-12-3 while Classical dropped to 1-16-1.

McNeil was very pleased with the win and said, "We are looking forward to next year with twenty-two experienced players with a lot of game time."

Durgin was disappointed with the loss, but not with her players. She said, "I am so proud of the girls. They never gave up and played every game right to the end. I am especially proud of my three captains, Jillian Reddy (injured for most of the season), Courtney Sullivan and Bryanna Connolly."

English and Classical both have players who participated in the North-South all-star game played at Manning Field on Sunday.

Representing English were senior captain Rebidue, sophomore keeper Goulet, who had six shutouts, and leading scorer sophomore Megan Forti. Representing Classical were senior keeper Sullivan and sophomore Kelly Deveney.

Peabody 6, Classical 0

At Peabody, Courtney Sullivan (18 saves) had another strong game in net despite the score. It was senior night in Peabody and the Tanners not only recognized their own seniors, but they also presented carnations to the graduating Classical players.

"They showed they're a classy team and I wish them well," Classical coach Marcy Durgin said "I think they'll go deep in the tournament."

Salem 6,Classical 0

At Manning Field, Rams (1-12-2) keeper Courtney Sullivan had 17 saves and Amanda Stevens played well at forward.

Beverly 4, Classical 1

At Beverly, junior Danielle Jesoraldo scored for the Rams with the assist going to freshman Christine Francois. Katie Fitzgerald and Fallon Gaudet all played well despite the loss. Classical is 1-11-2.

 Revere 1, Classical 0

The Rams, 1-10-2, "didn't play our game," said coach Marci Durgin.
Still, she wanted to credit sweeper Kelly Deveney and midfielder Nikki Kourembanas for playing well.
Classical plays Thursday at Beverly.

Classical Lands in Win Column

Courtesy of The Daily Item of Lynn, 10/5/07

The Classical High girls soccer team has struggled this season, but the Rams finally cracked the win column Thursday, defeating Gloucester, 2-0, at Gloucester.

Senior Courtney Sullivan was immense in net for the Rams, making 19 saves and picking up her first shutout of the season. Freshman Christine Francois also wore the hero's hat, scoring a goal and assisting on another.

Francois scored Classical's first goal on a free kick that found the top of the net in the first half. Jessie Carredano supplied an insurance goal when she scored off a Francois corner kick.

"Every game she gets better and better," Classical coach Marcy Durgin said about Francois, adding that Sullivan was getting to everything that came her way.

"Anything that came inside the 18 was hers," Durgin said.

English, Classical Girls Soccer in 1-1 Stalemate

By Art McManus / For The Daily Item of Lynn, Tuesday, September 25, 2007

LYNN -- To many people, the Super Bowl or the World Series is the ultimate in sports; to the Lynn soccer community it is the Classical-English matches.

Records mean nothing. Anyone who has played in these games remembers everything that ever happened, even if it was 20 years ago.

Monday night at Manning Field, both games finished in ties. The girls opened the festivities in the 4 p.m. game and played to a 1-1 tie. Both teams feature outstanding keepers, senior co-captain Courtney Sullivan for Classical and sophomore Brittany Goulet for English. The score at halftime was 0-0 because the defenders of both teams stuffed any opportunities that the other team had. The defenders for English are Marina Biondi, Maria Beaulieu, Maura Coyle and freshman Shawna Henry at sweeper. Henry, more than anyone else on the Bulldogs team, kept the Ram strikers off the board.

For Classical, Katie Fitzgerald, Jillian Adams and Kelly Devaney shut down Kristi Rebidue and Megan Forti.

The second half opened with the same intensity by both teams. This lasted until the 50th minute when co-captain Bryanna Connolly collected a pass outside the top right corner of the area and lofted a shot high over the keeper's head into the left corner. This was the first and only time that she was left unmarked in the game, and she came through with the go-ahead goal. Eight minutes later, co-captain/midfielder Jillian Reddy made an attack down the right wing only to be taken down in the area for a penalty shot. Reddy had to be removed from the game due to an injured ankle in the collision. Connolly took the PK and missed low and just outside the left post. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Rams.

The frantic pace continued until the 78th minute, just 2 minutes from the end. Jenna Henry, the English striker, was taken down in the area and the referee awarded English a penalty shot. The Bulldogs' top shooter, Forti, calmly drilled the ball low left to tie the game at 1-1. The game ended with both teams leaving everything they had out on the field.

English coach Ed McNeil, whose team's record now goes to 1-5-1 (0-4-1 NEC), said, "We dominated the play and had the most chances to score, but the ball didn't go in." He continued, "We are 1-0-1 with Classical this year. Our biggest game will be Oct. 27, the rematch."

Classical coach Marcy Durgin was disappointed, being only 2 minutes from her team's first win. She said, "We will continue to work harder to get the first win. We need it."

Both teams play in a tripleheader Wednesday at Manning Field: St. Mary's-Arlington Catholic in the first game, Classical-Saugus at 5:15 and English-Marblehead at 7:30.

Thursday, 9/20/07   Peabody 7, Classical 1

At Manning Field, Classical's Bryanna Connolly scored with 13 minutes remaining, but it barely made a ding in the score. Peabody led 5-0 at the half and 6-0 when Connolly found the net. The Tanners (4-0) had seven different people score: Erika DiGiacomo, Emily Manoogian, Amanda Lowry, Alyssa Manoogian, Lauren Ward, Kathleen Dolan and Lindsey Elwell.

Tuesday, 9/18/07   Salem 1, Classical 0

At Bertram Field, Classical keeper Courtney Sullivan posted 22 saves. Salem broke through on a low, hard shot from the top of the box by Christine Hinch with 1:33 remaining. Monique Gallant had the assist.

Salem keeper Kristin Wyke (1 save) picked up the shutout.

Salem is 2-2 and Classical is 0-4-1.

Friday, 9/14/07     Beverly 2, Classical 0

At Hood Park, the Panthers scored 23 minutes into the game and again at the 63rd minute. Courtney Sullivan (10 saves) was in net for the Rams. Sweeper Kelly Deveney played well.

English Girls Defeat Classical in Consolation Game 4-0

By Art McManus / For The Daily Item of Lynn, 9/10/07

LYNN -- Classical and English battled in the girls consolation game of the Lynn City Tourney. English won 4-0. All money raised (over $4,000) went directly to the Special Olympics. Everything was donated, from the food to the trophies to the referees working for no fee.

Because the field temperature at game time approached 140 degrees, it was decided to play the game in quarters so the players could get water and a quick break.

Classical came in with a 0-1-1 record, after losing Tuesday in the tourney and tying Revere 3-3.

English was 0-2-0, also losing in the tourney and then losing its opening NEC game to Salem 5-1.

The game was played at a high rate of speed despite the hot conditions. English opened the scoring at the thirty-one-minute mark when Lindsey Ray took a pass from Lauren Hinkle and Cara Crowley on the right wing and beat Ram keeper Courtney Sullivan to the short side.

The second half was only five minutes old when sophomore Megan Forti took a dead-ball kick from 35 yards out and put it in over the keeper's head. This upped the score in English's favor, 2-0. Ten minutes later, Marina Biondi repeated the shot with the ball sailing high into the short-side corner.

English finished the scoring when Devon Robinson carried the ball down the right wing and passed it through the crease, where Stephanie Brault had an easy tap-in to make the score Bulldogs 4, Rams 0.

The tourney presented an award to the MVP on each team, as selected by the respective head coaches. The Classical MVP was Kelly Deveney and the English MVP was Forti.

Girls Soccer Falls to Pope John in Tourney Nightcap

LYNN -- The Classical girls faced off against the Pope John Tigers from Everett in the second game in the Lynn Soccer Tourney.

Second year Classical coach Marcy Durgin was looking to start off the year right, led by her three captains, Jillian Reddy, Courtney Sullivan and Bryanna Connolly. However, at the end, the Tigers emerged with the win, 1-0.

Coach Durgin said before the game, "we have a very young group of defenders ( 1 junior, 2 sophomores and 1 freshman) that will learn as they get more game experience."

The defense is backboned by keeper Courtney Sullivan who has been in the net for four years.

This was as exciting as the first game that saw seven goals scored.

For the first 17 minutes the game was dead even when the quick Pope John forwards got a break from mid-field on the slower Ram defenders. Sophomore Ashley Orozco slipped a pass from senior captain Jacki Carlson under the diving Classical keeper into the bottom left corner of the net.

The rest of the first half was played between the penalty areas with neither team getting any outstanding chances to score. The half ended with Pope John in the lead 1-0.

The second half was a contrast in styles, Classical throwing caution to the wind and attacking at every opportunity while Pope John was trying to hold on to its one goal lead. As Classical added more players to the attack, Pope John brought more players back to play defense. It turned the game into a kick and run game. The contest was whether Classical would score and force a penalty kick shootout to determine the winner or would the clock run out and make the Pope John Tigers the winner. This time the clock won. Pope John will play St. Mary's on Saturday at 5:00 in the Championship game. Classical will take on long-standing cross-town rivals, the Bulldogs from English in a 1:00 game. Classical opens its NEC season on Friday with at game in Revere.

Classical Girls Soccer Team Blanks English
By Art McManus / For The Daily Item of Lynn, Thursday, October 26, 2006

LYNN -- In a fitting end to the regular season, Classical and English put on a great show at the new Manning Field. The girls game opened the show, and Classical held the day here, defeating English, 3-0.

"(The win) gives us something to build on for next year," said an elated Marcy Durgin of Classical. "It was the most complete game we played all year."

Classical came into the game with a 4-10-2 record, and opened the scoring at the six-minute mark when Paulina Koutroubis put a through ball up the middle from mid field to Jill Reddy who beat the keeper to the ball, got around the keeper, and had the whole net to shoot at. She put it in the low left corner to make the score 1-0, Classical.

The Classical defenders, sweeper Allison Donovan, Jill Magner, Vanessa Francois, and Samantha Barker had all they could do to keep the ball out of the Rams' net, and keeper Courtney Sullivan scooped up every ball that got by them.

English's best chance in the first half came at the 36thminute when a shot hit the crossbar and deflected to an English striker who had the whole net to shoot at. She rushed her shot and it sailed harmlessly over the net.

In the 39th minute, Paulina Koutroubis took a pass from Kristina Tsolias and carried the ball down the left wing until she was even with the top of the area. She crossed the ball into the box, where Bryanna Connolly settled it in front of the keeper Cara Crowley. The keeper came off her line late and Connolly put it into the corner to make the score 2-0 just before the end of the first half.

The second half started with English on the attack. Lady Bulldog defenders Maria Angelone, Marina Biondi, Ashley Mercer, and Maria Beaulieu kept dumping the ball into Classical's end.

Finally Classical mounted a sustained attack and it paid off in the 56th minute when Connolly scored her second goal of the game with an assist to Magner.

The cross from Magner to Connolly in front of the net was perfect and she put it behind the keeper.

The teams played the rest of the game at midfield.

Despite the loss, English coach Ed McNeil was happy the way the season went.

"We have 15 freshmen and sophomores who got a lot of playing time and experience this year," he said. "We hope to improve on it next year."

Classical-English Girls Tie in Soccer Nightcap
By Art McManus / For The Daily Item of Lynn, Wednesday, October 11, 2006

LYNN -- One of the bigger ironies of the new Manning Field is that Classical girls soccer coach Marcy Durgin got to play on his before her brother, Matt, who is the football coach for the Rams.

That happened last night as the Lady Rams took the field and fought to a 1-1 tie with intra-city rival Lynn English in the nightcap of the semi-autumnal doubleheader clash between the two schools.

"It was a great game and this is a wonderful place to play," said Durgin, who took over as the team's coach this year. "We still have another chance to play them (Wed, Oct 25) and we feel we can win."

The game was evenly played for the first half. Both teams had scoring chances .

The English defenders, in front of Freshman keeper Brittany Goulet, senior Nicole Kidney and sophomores

Ashley Keighley,Kayla Seaman and Marina Biondi, kept Classical's top scorer Paulina Koutroubis in check.

The first half ended 0-0. All the goals were scored in a three- minute period of the second half.

At the 61st minute, Classical had a corner kick. Koutroubis took the kick from the left side. It bounced off a few players in front of the keeper until Kristina Tsolias passed the ball to Ashley D'Entremont, who put it by the English keeper.

Three minutes later Kristi Rebidue of English took a through pass from freshman Megan Forti and beat keeper Courtney Sullivan to the low right corner.

Still, Durgin said, "she's been a force for us. She has come up with big saves when we need it."

Classical had one more chance, six minutes before full time Classical scored, only to have the referee call offside.

Ed McNeil, English coach, had high praise for all of his players.

"We are getting better every game and hope that the rest of the season goes as well," he said.

Classical moves to2-8-1 (2-6-1 NEC South).

Englishi's McNeil has worked wonders with the Lady Bulldogs. He carries 15 freshman and sophomores on a team of 21 players.

He has an overall record of 3-6-2 (1-5-2 NEC South).

"Our underclassmen are being tested against some of the best teams in the North," he said. "They are getting better with every game."

Classical Girls Soccer Gets Ready for Season
By Joyce Erekson, The Daily Item of Lynn, Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Classical coach Marcy Durgin, who took over the head coaching job for her sister, Maura, after serving as her assistant for many years, is also dealing with low numbers. Durgin said she has about 23 players, 20 of them who have been showing up for practice regularly.

Classical has always had enough players to field a varsity and junior varsity, but Durgin said it looks like there'll only be a varsity this year.

"The junior varsity team is a feeder program, so that concerns me for the future," Durgin said.

Most of Durgin's players are juniors and seniors, with only one freshman showing up so far. The senior class features captains Paulina Koutroubis, a forward, and sweeper Allison Donovan. Jill Magner, a midfielder and three-year varsity player; defender Vanessa Francois, a four-year varsity player, and Denielle Harris, a forward, round out the list of returning seniors.

Goalie Courtney Sullivan will return for her third year in net. Fellow juniors Allison Burggren, Laura McLaughlin and Samantha Barker will also be getting the call, as will Bryanna Connolly, Morgan Murphy, Kelsey Ylonen, Jillian Reddy, Ashley D'Entremont and Rocio Funez.

The sophomore class will feature Nikki Kourembanas, Katie Fitzgerald and Danielle Jesoraldo while Abby Field is the lone freshman.

"My numbers are down, but the kids are working really hard," Durgin said. "They know each of them has a role to fill and that I'm going to rely on each one of them."

Durgin's assistant is Michael Zukowski, who coached the junior varsity for the last five years. Classical will open next Tuesday against St. Mary's.
