Most will assume
that the Lynn Classical History Club is an association in which history loving
students gather together to discuss past or present events, but this is not what
we are all about. Since the start
of the school year in September 2005 members have been planning many different
projects and events.
In November as a
tribute to our veterans, we joined forces with the Lynn Classical Key Club, a
community service organization to collect donations for the Support Our Troops
Program. By no means was this an
act of support for or against the war. It
was an act of support for our troops. The
money donated was used to create care packages for our soldiers overseas.
Donors were also given the option of writing Thank You Cards and leaving
their name and address if they wished to keep in contact with a soldier.
During the holiday
season we once again joined forces with the Key Club to perform an act of
community service. This time we
wanted to Give A Child A Christmas. With
donations and money from our bake sale, we were able to purchase gifts and
pajamas for over 15 elementary school children.
Continuing on with
our busy schedule, during the month of January we sold lollipops as a fundraiser
for future field trips. Dedicated
members also began to plan for our President’s Day Event.
Our President’s
Day Event took place in February. It
was a fun filled afternoon in which Fourth Graders from the Julia F. Callahan
School celebrated the birthdays of our nations Founding Fathers.
Students did word searches and colored pictures in one of the three
rotational rooms. In another room
the children we divided into two teams and were quizzed on facts about our
President. They were also asked to
write down a fact on a cherry or a portion of a beard about either President
Washington or President Lincoln. The
third room was for snack time. The
children were offered chips, grapes, juice, and ice cream!
This was an enjoyable event for the children and our club members.
During the week of
mandatory standardized testing very committed members gave up their valuable
sleeping in time to sell bagels and donuts during the morning testing period.
The bagels and donuts were easy to sell because students and teachers who
came to school during the typical school day time were able to purchase their
breakfast in school instead of going to the local shop.
Preparing for the
Relay for Life-Walk for Cancer Event, the History Club has been attending Team
Captain Meetings and establishing teams for the relay.
All walkers were required to pay a registration fee of $10 to the
American Caner Society. The relay
will take place from Friday, June 9th to Saturday June 10th
at Breed Middle School. Some
members have raised over $50 already!
About Us
When most people hear about the History Club, they think "Wow, that must be boring". Well, that's wrong. History Club is not just a bunch of students who sit around and talk about history all day. We are an active group. Like other clubs, we're always trying to raise money for an end of the year field trip, selling either candy or lollipops. To help, we also have a bake sale. The money we raised has brought us to places such as Boston for the re-enactment of the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, to plays in Salem, to museums in Concord, and so much more.
We also like to teach younger children a little bit of our history. Every year we host an elementary class for a day and try to make fun games and activities for them to learn from. Last year the kids learned about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Each child made a Lincoln hat and a group poster on each president.
Besides these activities, we also try to find new events. This year the History and Key Clubs are raising money to "Give a Child a Christmas" for kids who family can't afford it. We're going to wrap presents including things such as hats, jackets, shirts, gloves, and toys to help an unfortunate child receive a special Christmas. In doing this, the History and Key Clubs are giving back to the community. Although we're a History Club, we're always open to new things. This is what makes History Club great and especially not boring.

Lynn Classical High School History Club ( Reprinted from the OAH Newsletter, August 2005 )
Lynn Classical is a l,500-student high school located in a city of strong middle class and immigrant neighborhoods. The students come from very diverse backgrounds and, after graduation, go on to further education at colleges like Yale and Harvard or local two-year colleges like North Shore Community College. Some students enter the workforce immediately after graduation or enter military service. With such diversity, it was surprising that there was no History Club until a group of students asked me if I would help them start one and be the advisor. We have just finished our third year.

Members of the Lynn Classical High School History Club join in on a historical reenactment.
I would say that our first goal is to have fun, followed closely by seeing history in action. We regularly join the reenactments of Paul Revere's Midnight Ride in Lexington, the Boston Tea Party, and the Boston Massacre. In February, we host a birthday party for Washington and Lincoln for the fourth graders of the nearby elementary school. In addition to cake and cookies, we quiz the students on geography and U.S. history. In June, we walk the Boston Freedom Trail and later this year we will visit Harvard's Fogg Art Museum and enjoy lunch at Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage. In the past, we hosted a speaker from the Holocaust Survivors' Center and held lectures by some of our own faculty. We also regularly participate in Massachusetts History Day competition.
It has been a rewarding experience for me to share my love of history with students who are willing to give up a Friday night to watch how history was made. See us in action at the school's website http://www.lynnclassical.org/historyclub2.htm. CJ

Guest Speaker Joseph Matzner - November 10, 2003
Joseph Matzner survived typhoid fever in a filthy Jewish ghetto, survived the horrors of five concentration camps, survived the infamous Death March, and operated on his own leg to save his life. He related these stories and more to hundreds of students at LCHS. And the students had many questions to ask him. Joe's visit was poignant and memorable for all who attended.

Mr. Coolidge leads the History Club on a special Boston Tour
Boston Massacre

On March 5, 1770 a crowd of 400 colonists gathered and taunted British
Soldiers on what is now called State Street.
All of a sudden shots rang out with an end result of five dead colonists.
On March 5, 2003 members of the History Club went to State Street. We first went to Quincy Market for some food.
As we left we joined up with the colonists who were beginning to gather
people. We walked a short distance
to the Old State House. Spectators were asked to participate in taunting the British
Soldiers so they could have the sound of 400 people. Only about ten people in
the crowd actually shouted. We did
Lynn Classical proud by making the majority of the crowd participating and we
made the noise of a few hundred people.
After the reenactment we were able to take some pictures with some of them. We were also able to joke around with some of them about history. We also had a big surprise. A man from the “future” showed up. Mr. Abraham Lincoln came to see the reenactment.
History Day Competition

Members of the Lynn Classical High School History Club participated in
the Massachusetts History Day Competition.
It was held at Wilmington High School on March 1, 2003.
The topic that was given was Rights and Responsibilities in History.
Adam Donachie and Iliana Velazquez did a group performance entitled
“The Accused”. It was about the
Salem With Trials. Sophie Zlatina
did an individual performance on Women’s Suffrage.
Maholy Montaos and Nesrin Elshazly did an exhibit on Religious Rights in
the House of Tudor. We enjoyed
looking at other times in history and learning many different things we had not
known before.
