Jack Morrison is Named the New Classical Golf Coach

By Joyce Erekson / The Daily Item, August 10, 2009

The Classical High golf team has a new coach.

Jack Morrison, a former Lynner and St. Mary's High graduate, was hired to replace Jay Fiste, who left to take the St. Mary's High golf coaching job previously held by Mark Lee.

Although Morrison lives in Beverly, he's no stranger to the Lynn schools. He has been a teacher at Lynn Tech for the past 22 years and was a member at Gannon Municipal Golf Course for about 30 years. He's currently a member at Beverly Golf & Tennis.

Morrison graduated from St. Mary's in 1973. He was a captain of the golf team back then and went on to play at Salem State College. He was also in the New England Professional Golf Association internship program for several years.

Morrison inherits a program that has struggled with low numbers. He said his understanding is that there were approximately 12 players on the team last year, and four have graduated.

"I'm hoping to see some smiling freshman faces at our first meeting," Morrison said. "I want to try and build the program."

Morrison said younger children tend to flock to sports like baseball, softball and hockey, with their interest in golf often developing a little later in life. Morrison said when he was a youngster, he caddied at some of the area clubs. In addition to making a few bucks, he said it helped spark his interest in the game and it resulted in friendships that still endure today.

"When you're caddying, you meet other kids who are caddying and might get together with a couple of them and play," he said.

This is Morrison's first varsity coaching job, although the father of three did coach his own children in youth soccer and, to a lesser extent, in hockey. He said his daughter, who recently graduated from college, had no interest in golf when she was younger and now wishes she had taken it up.

"I enjoy the game," he said. "I'd like to see the kids grow and get better at it."

Morrison said that as an adult out in the work world, you come to realize that a lot of business is conducted on the golf course and knowing how to play the game can have its benefits.

My Four Great Years on the Classical Golf Team

This year’s Classical Golf season was a rough road to take, leading to a 2-14 record in the end.  Despite the struggle to defeat our opponents, we did have a couple of bright spots during this 2008 season.  We defeated Lynn English for bragging rights our second time around with them this season, clinching a feeling that bettered our overall point of view, that us as a team really did have some talent to work with.  Another bright spot that encouraged our team this season was when we beat Revere.  Receiving our first win of the season over Revere was huge, because up until then we were faced with a zero in the win column.  This built up our confidence in a way even though we knew that this year’s team was a whole new team compared to all the other years of Classical Golf.  We stuck through it all though working as a team to do our best every match, and to represent Classical the best we could.

As a senior now at Lynn Classical, I have been honored with four years of experience on the golf team, making Varsity and starting in every single match since I was a freshman.  I was introduced to the golf team entering into my freshman year, and worked very hard to impress Coach Jay Fiste.  I didn’t know what to expect going into tryouts for the first time, but I played my best game and got on Fiste’s “good side” right away, building a relationship with him and playing for him throughout my four years on the team.

Even though I’ve enjoyed every single year on the golf team, this year was different.  This year I got to spend the entire season playing in matches beside my good friend Sean Winchell, which has been my partner in matches since sophomore year.  Sean is a very good player and has accomplished many achievements throughout his high school golf years also.  Coach Fiste knew right from the beginning that Sean and I would work the best together, resulting in winning seasons this year for the both of us individually, and making us Captains of the team.

I experienced a great regular season for my last year on the team individually, but was also honored with additions to this year’s season.  This year, along with last year, I was nominated to compete in the NEC Open to represent Classical.  This was a great opportunity for me to better myself and get used to competing in such events.  This wasn’t the only honor that I was nominated for, though.  In addition again  this season, I was nominated to compete in the State Tournament qualifying round , due to the individual record that I worked very hard to accomplish.  I finished my individual season record 7-6-3, and this put me in the State Tournament as the only player from Classical golf to represent the school.  Even though I struggled to succeed in these two Tournaments, I look at them as events to improve upon. The next time I get the chance to compete in something similar again I will know what to expect

.  The best moment that I experienced though this season came against Gloucester.  This was when I defeated Josh Salah in a head-to-head battle 5-4, shooting a 37, one over par, to claim what my coach said was, “The best match and defeat he has ever seen in Classical golf history.”  I thank Coach Fiste for giving me the opportunity of having four successful golf seasons with him, and most of all, playing alongside my other teammates to strive to be the best that we could be.

Tough Start for Classical Golf Team

September 3, 2008 , from the Item
Lynn Classical High School golf coach Jay Fiste had an outstanding weekend, winning the Mixed Classic at Gannon Golf Course with his wife, Jane.

However, Coach Fiste's team struggled in a season-opening tri-meet against Danvers and Marblehead at Tedesco Country Club in Marblehead on Tuesday. The Rams fell to both opponents, 57-15 to Danvers and 49-23 to Marblehead.

While the Rams' record now stands at 0-2 on the season, Fiste praised two of his players, Sean Winchell for his overall performance and Chris Merrill for his play against Marblehead.
