Girls Hockey Team 2011-12

(aka The Bulldogs)

The  Girls Hockey Team is a combined team with players from English, Classical, and Winthrop . Anthony Martucci of Winthrop coaches the combined team.

Lady Bulldogs upend St. Mary's

For several seasons now, the Winthrop/Lynn/Saugus girls hockey team has held up neighboring power St. Mary’s as the model of the type of program it hoped to become. The Lady Bulldogs realized that goal Saturday night at Winthrop's Larsen Rink with a 3-2 win in which they played with greater intensity throughout.

The milestone win was the 50th for coach Anthony Martucci since taking over the program. The ‘Dogs ran their record to 8-2-1 (6-0-0 GEMIHL Northeast) and their commitment to team defense was evident in front of seventh-grade goaltender Brittany McPherson (26 saves), especially in the final minute when senior captain Mackenzie Clark and others were selling out to block shots during a closing Spartans’ flurry.

“We played really, really well. We had to play a perfect game to beat them and came about as close to that as we possibly could,” said Martucci. “We’ve been working a lot this year on cementing down the defense in our own end in order to protect our young goalies and our four defensemen (Kat Salvetti, Julianna Kennedy, Vanessa Vanbuskirk, Kasey Harris) have done so well limiting the other team’s chances.

"And I thought our first line got the better of the match-ups tonight. There are some great lines in this division at Hingham, Acton-Boxboro and obviously St. Mary’s but we feel our group is right up there.”

Winthrop-Lynn’s box-to-wire effort earned considerable praise from St. Mary’s mentor Frank Pagliuca.

“They played with great intensity from the drop of the puck. They played like they were playing for a State Championship; we played like we were playing a game in January. Credit them -- they deserved to win the game,” he said. “We had multiple chances to finish opportunities and we did not. Winthrop-Lynn finished theirs. We came out a little flat for the second game in a row and need to fix our lack of intensity at the start of games.”

The Bulldogs gave an immediate indication of the type of night that loomed when Clarke set up Hannah Lopresti for a quick finish past Spartans’ goalie Lauren Skinnon (18 saves) with just 1:10 off the first-period clock.

Clarke’s power play strike at 8:23 of the second period, with assists from Vanbuskirk and Cordes, doubled the ‘Dogs’ margin to 2-0. Brittani Lanzilli, assisted by Alison Butler, countered that goal and gave St. Mary’s life heading into the third period when she scored with just 2:23 left in the third.

However, Bulldog freshman Caroline McKinnon (from Harris) pushed the margin back to 3-1 with 11:01 to play. St. Mary’s lone answer came from Lanzilli on the power play with 7:36 to play accounting for the final as McPherson stood up to St. Mary’s furious final assault. Pagliuca cited the solid play of defenseman Madison Molea, who logged significant time due to an injury on the Spartans’ back line.

Both teams have league games with title implications on Wednesday. The Bulldogs can wrap up the GEMIHL Northeast crown with a win against Beverly while St. Mary’s (10-3-0, 3-0-0) faces undefeated Catholic Central League co-leader Arlington Catholic (13-0-1, 3-0-0) at Ed Burns Arena for the first of two games in an eight-day span.

Bulldogs avoid 'trap' game, prevail over Medford

Thursday, January 26, 2012

With a showdown with St. Mary's looming on Saturday, one couldn't blame the girls hockey team if it was looking ahead to the Spartans coming to town. But the Bulldogs weren't doing that and it showed on Wednesday.

Led by five-point efforts from both Mackenzie Clark and Hannah LoPresti, Winthrop/Lynn  rolled to a 7-3 win over Medford at Larsen Arena.

"It was a good win," \ coach Anthony Martucci said. "This could have been a trap game for us but the girls came out and played very well."

It didn't take long for the Bulldogs (7-2-1) to get going as Clark scored just 75 seconds in. She added another goal at 4:15 before LoPresti made it 3-0 midway through the first before Medford got one back late.

Clark netted a power play goal midway through the second to make it a three-goal game again before Medford's Jen White scored on a penalty shot, cutting the gap to 4-2 after two.

Clark restored order early in the third as her shorthanded goal at 59 seconds was followed by a Chelsey Bartlett goal to make it 6-2. Medford cut the lead to three before Bartlett capped the scoring with just over a minute remaining.

Bulldogs 4, Masco 1

At Larsen Arena in Winthrop, Kara Donati had a pair of goals as the Bulldogs (6-2-1) put 58 shots on goal en route to the win. Flora English and Mackenzie Clark also had goals with Vanessa Van Buskirk handing out two assists

Winthrop/Lynn girls hockey rolls Tide

Mackenzie Clark of Lynn helped the girls hockey team defeat Everett at Everett on Saturday.

EVERETT - It took a while for the  girls hockey team to find its offensive touch Saturday in Everett, but once it did, it never looked back, cruising to a 6-1 victory over the host Crimson Tide at Allied Veterans Rink.

"We came out and played just the way I hoped and expected we would," said  coach Anthony Martucci. "Everett's a tough solid team but I felt we played very well today."

The Lady Bulldogs (5-2-1, 4-0-0) dominated the territorial play and peppered Everett (2-8-0, 1-3-0) goalie Casarra Roderick early in the first without any result.

Finally, with just over 2:00 to play, a Caroline McKinnon shot found its way through traffic giving Winthrop/Lynn the 1-0 lead. Amanda Cordes  was credited with an assist.

Just 25 seconds after the opening goal, Mackenzie Clark (Lynn) fired a low shot on net through net-front traffic giving the visitors the 2-0 lead. Hannah LoPresti  and Chelsey Bartlett  assisted. The second period would prove no different for Everett as the 'Dawgs continued their strong play.

At 8:16, McKinnon tipped a Kara Donati  pass over Roderick's shoulder for a commanding three-goal lead. LoPresti added another tally at 4:49, banging home a loose puck in the crease. Clark and Bartlett assisted.

At the other end of the ice, Winthrop/Lynn goalie Brittany McPherson faced her first true test with three minutes remaining in the period. Everett's Gab Ramunno moved in alone but McPherson shut the door.

"Brittany did a good job in not losing focus while the puck was down the other end," said Martucci. "She didn't see a lot of action, but when she did, she played great."

The 'Dawgs would tack on two quick goals to start the third. Lopresti from Bartlett and Clark extended the lead to five before defenseman Julianna Kennedy  roofed one top corner to close out the Winthrop scoring.

The highlight reel goal from Kennedy was great to see for Martucci, who stresses the usage of defensemen in the offensive zone.

"We try to work the puck back there; it's something we have worked on all year," he said. "We have some defensemen who can move the puck and take good shots."

McPherson's shutout bid came to an end at 10:24 as Everett's Rebecca Westgate intercepted a pass in the slot before beating McPherson with a hard wrist shot. McPherson finished with six saves.

Another team asset on display was the Winthrop/Lynn penalty kill, which fended off three Everett power plays, which allowed the Crimson Tide no chance to gain some confidence.

"This is the second year in a row we have had a really good penalty kill," said Martucci. "Donati and McKinnon work very well together on the kill. We practice it a lot in practice and the girls enjoy killing penalties, which is always good to see."

Chelsea Bartlett scores four goals in Bulldogs' win

Chelsey Bartlett and Mackenzie Clark provided a devastating one-two punch for the combined Winthrop/Lynn/Saugus girls hockey team Wednesday in an 8-2 win over Medford at LoConte Rink.

Classical's Bartlett scored four goals and English's Clark scored twice and picked up four assists for the Bulldogs, who improve to 3-1 with the win.

"Chelsey Bartlett is probably playing as good as I've ever seen her play," Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci said.

"Her attitude is phenomenal. She's worked really hard at practice. She's controlling the puck, seeing the ice well and she's really making an effort to stay out of the penalty box. She's playing tremendous hockey for us," Martucci said.

Clark's six points brought her to 147 career points.

The Bulldogs led 2-0 after one period on goals by Clark and Bartlett. They blew the game open in the second period with four goals, two by Bartlett, one by Emma Rudser and one by Kara Doni. Clark had three assists that period.

Medford scored at the end of the second period to avoid the shutout and then again at the start of the third. The goals were by Jen White and Marissa Williams.

The Bulldogs added two more to wrap things up, one by Clark and the other by Bartlett. Bartlett's goal was assisted by Clark and another Lynn player, Kasey Harris from Classical.

Gretchen Howard was in net for the win.

Bulldogs  5,  Marblehead 2

The first line of Hannah Lopresti (two goals, assist), Mackenzie Clark (goal, two assists) and Chelsey Bartlett (three assists) powered the Lady Bulldogs (2-1) Sunday afternoon at Larsen Rink. Clark now has 141 career points.

"Our first line kind of dominated play and our power play moved the puck well and got some good chances. It is always nice to beat Marblehead - they are a very tough team and well-coached," said coach Anthony Martucci.

The 'Dawgs also got goals from Julianna Kennedy and Kara Donatti while eighth-grade goalie Gretchen Howard turned back 21 shots. Emmarose Winder and Rachel McKay scored for Marblehead (0-2) and Aly Hopkins stopped 15 shots in her first varsity start.

Bulldogs 4, Masco 1

At Gloucester, the combined Winthrop/Lynn/Saugus Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals to even their record at 1-1. Ariana Dembro scored 2:44 into the first period to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead, but Masco came back to tie it early in the second period. Winthrop took control on goals by Chelsey Bartlett, Amanda Cordes and Julianna Kennedy.

Coach Anthony Martucci said his team heavily outshot Masco, putting 68 shots on net, but junior goalie Alex Jones stopped just about everything that came her way. Gretchen Howard was in net for Winthrop.

Bulldogs girls hockey team looks to repeat its success

It won't be easy repeating last year's success, but the combined Winthrop/Lynn/Saugus girls hockey team is up for the challenge.

The Bulldogs finished 17-4-1 last season and went all the way to the Division 1 semifinals before losing to Hingham, the eventual state champion. The players who returned from that team will have a little extra motivation to achieve given the fact they lost 5-4 in a shootout after what would have been the winning goal was called back in overtime.

This year's team will have some huge holes to fill with the departure of goalie Kate Burt of Lynn, who is now playing at Buckingham, Brown and Nichols, and Taylor Brown, the high-flying defenseman from Winthrop who finished her high school career with 104 points, second highest in the program's history.

"We just hope we can answer the bell again," coach Anthony Martucci said.

The combined team will feature four girls from Lynn, six from Saugus and eight from Winthrop.

The Lynn contingent is led by senior captain Mackenzie Clark from English.

Clark has been immense for the Bulldogs. The first-line center is the program's all-time leading scorer with 137 points. Last year, she had 44 points (19 goals, 25 assists). Joining her on the first line will be wings Hannah Lopresti, a senior all-star from Saugus, and Kara Donati, a junior from Saugus. Catherine Salvetti and Julianna Kennedy will be the first line of defense.

Chelsey Bartlett, a senior at Classical High, will join Amanda Cordes, Caroline McKinnon and Arianna Dembro on the second line. Cordes and Dembro will share time at left wing. Vanessa Van Buskirk, an eighth grader from Winthrop, will join Kasey Harris, a freshman at Classical, on second defense.

The big question heading into this season was who will replace Burt in net. The answer is either Brittany McPherson, an eighth grader from Lynn (Pickering Middle School) or Gretchen Howard, an eighth grader from Winthrop. McPherson was in the news this past summer as a member of the state champion Wyoma Little League softball team that reached the East Regionals in Bristol, Conn.

Martucci said both girls are looking very good. The Bulldogs scrimmaged Reading Wednesday in a game that ended in a 2-2 tie. Each goalie gave up one goal. Martucci said McPherson is also a very good forward, but is concentrating on the net right now.

"It's a very healthy competition (in net)," Martucci said.

Overall, Martucci is optimistic about the upcoming season.

"I think we're strong defensively. We pretty much have four girls returning who got a lot of experience," Martucci said.

Offensively, Martucci is counting on Clark.

"We put a lot of weight on Mackenzie Clark," he said, noting that her offensive production has gone up every year. "Chelsey Bartlett also brings a nice edge. If we can grab some goals out of her, we'll be in good shape."

The Saugus contingent also includes Courtney Whyte, a freshman defenseman, and Anastasia Bartol, a freshman left winger. Whyte is the niece of Saugus' Sandra Whyte, who played for the U.S. women's hockey team in the Olympics.

The other Winthrop players include eighth graders Flora English, Emma Rudser and Nicole Pucillo; freshman Annie Mahoney and junior Erin O'Leary.

The combined team opens the season Saturday at Larsen Rink in Winthrop against Barnstable (6:10).

The team lost one player - Anna Fucillo - who transferred to Phillips Andover Academy. Another key player from last year's team, Courtney McTague, graduated.

Lynn/Winthrop loses Nailbiter to Hingham

STONEHAM - The question of the night at the Stoneham Arena was, "Was it a goal or wasn't it?"

The question was asked not once, but twice ... and at the same end of the rink both times. Both the Lynn/Winthrop girls combined team and Hingham thought they'd had a goal, but the referees waved them both off. It only ended up costing one team, however ... and that team was the Bulldogs, who fell to Hingham, 4-3, in a shootout in the Division 1 state semifinal.

In the third period, a Hingham shot stopped right on the goal line. The light went on, but the referees overruled the goal judge.

In overtime, however, Bulldog Mackenzie Clark (and most people who were sitting behind the net) thought she'd scored the game-winner to cap off the upset to end all upsets in high school sports this winter. She took a shot from about 10 feet out and the puck appeared to hit the back of the net and bounced back out all within the blink of an eye.

The goal judge didn't put the light on this time, and neither referee would overrule his decision. And when Hingham outscored the Bulldogs 3-2 in the shootout, the Harborwomen had their date in next Sunday's state final against Acton-Boxboro.

The explanations after the game were as varied as you could imagine.

"I thought that it went in," Clark said. "But the referees said, 'no goal, no goal.' But if that's the case, why did the whistle blow?"

The goal judge said the puck hit the post, as did Hingham goalie Beth Findley.

"It hit off my glove and hit the post," she said. "All I can do is thank the hockey gods. That was karma, I guess, for our goal that was disallowed."

Hingham coach Tom Findley said he thought there was a stick with black tape that had been pushed into the net, and it created the illusion that it was a puck.

And Bulldog coach Anthony Martucci said, "I thought it was in, but I don't know. It was a great shot by Mackenzie. If it went in, great. But that's the game."

That the Bulldogs were even in the position to be involved in a controversy at all was 100 percent attributable to Pickering eighth grader and goalie Katie Burt, who saw 50 shots in regulation and stopped all but three of them.

"We build our team from the goalie out, and Katie just stood on her head tonight," Martucci said. "We knew that if we were going to win, Katie was going to have to steal it. And she almost did."

The Bulldogs got the jump in the first period when Clark scored off a faceoff at 9:54. But Hingham's Katie Walsh got that back on a goal that appeared to ricochet off a skate and change course.

After a scoreless second period, the third period was absolutely one for the books. Hingham went up 2-1 10 seconds into the period on Sarah Schwentzfeier's power play goal, but Chelsey Bartlett shot one from 15 feet out that zinged past Findley to tie it at 8:08. Schwentzfeier gave Hingham the lead again at 9:28, but Courtney McTague got the equalizer for the Bulldogs two minutes later.

Girls Hockey edges Arlington in Shootout

WINTHROP - There was some concern whether the Winthrop/Lynn girls hockey team might have some rust when it played its first postseason game Saturday against Arlington.

The Bulldogs hadn't played in nine days, while the Spy Ponders were coming off a 2-1 overtime thriller against Barnstable earlier in the week.

But Winthrop/Lynn skated through it for a 2-1 shootout win in Division 1 girls action at Larsen Rink -- ensured only after goalie Katie Burt forced defenseman Hannah Wright to fire wide on Arlington's final chance.

"I felt that we had the advantage because of Katie," said coach Anthony Martucci "She's one of the best goalies in the state, and she did what she did best."

The shootout's only goal came courtesy of Taylor Brown, who beat Arlington goalie Casey Schaejbe with a wrist shot on the team's third opportunity, with the puck trickling past the goalie and into the net.

Lynn/Winthrop plays later this week in the quarterfinal against either Medway/Ashland or Braintree.

"(Brown) got a head of steam, and took the shot," Martucci said. "She took it solidly, and it crossed over. It was a beautiful goal."

Arlington applied constant pressure on the 'Dogs (16-3-1), but Burt kept Arlington at bay. However, Spy Ponder forward Kristin McKenzie flicked a 15-foot wrist shot to the short side to even the score at 1-1 midway through the third period.

Both squads had chances for the victory in the 12-minute overtime, with perhaps Winthrop/Lynn's Courtney McTague having the best shot. Brown stole the puck near mid-ice, skated into the Arlington zone and slid the puck to McTague, who was standing in front of the Spy Ponders net. But Schaejbe gloved the shot for the save.

Wright had a good opportunity to give Arlington (15-6-1) the win, but Burt held her ground and kept the score tied.

Arlington had the best chances in a scoreless first period. Burt foiled Kelsey Russell's 20-footer on a two-man power play and did the same on Michelle Reilly's 15-foot slap shot.

Both teams had solid chances in the second period and it looked as if the score would be deadlocked heading into the third. But Brown beat Schaejbe with a 20-foot slap shot from the left side with 57 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Both goalies continued their stellar play throughout the third period, though McKenzie evened the game with just under six minutes left. Each team was foiled in the overtime, setting up Brown's shootout heroics.

Bulldogs 7, Masconomet 0

In Winthrop, the Lady Bulldogs (12-2-1) kept on rolling behind senior defenseman Taylor Brown and sophomore forward Kara Donati, who had two goals and an assist apiece. Goalie Katie Burt notched her eighth shutout of the season.

Bulldogs 4, Everett 2

At Everett, Mackenzie Clark scored two goals to lead the Lady Bulldogs, who are 11-2-1 heading into a game against Masconomet Saturday. Katie Burt (30 saves) picked up the win.

Bulldogs 5, Gardner 1

At Veteran's Rink in Gardner, the Bulldogs scored five unanswered goals as the team upped its record to 10-2-1.

While Gardner keeper Jinnelle Croteau was peppered with shots all game, Katie Burt made 16 saves for the Bulldogs and the victors received two goals from Mackenzie Clark and single scores from Taylor Brown, Anna Fucillo and Nicole Pucillo.

St. Mary's girls hockey wins city battle

LYNN -- Two of the top ranked teams in Division 1 girls hockey met at Connery Rink on Wednesday as No. 2 St. Mary's hosted No. 3 Bulldogs.

The Spartans big game experience proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to over come as St. Mary's powered its way to a 5-0 win, its seventh shutout in a row.

"We started off a little slow in the first period but in the second and third I thought we really played well," St. Mary's coach Frank Pagliuca said. "They were a quality team and we knew that we had to come out and play well from the start."

The Bulldogs (9-2-0) came in as one of the hottest teams in the state, having won nine straight, but on Wednesday they were simply overwhelmed by St. Mary's. Katie Burt was outstanding in goal, making 38 saves, to keep her team in the game.

"St. Mary's is a very disciplined, well coached hockey team," Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci said. "We came out nervous and tentative in the first period and were a little bit in awe of them."

St. Mary's (10-0-3) had an early power play when Caroline McKinnon was called for tripping at 2:29 but failed to convert. A little over a minute later they would break the ice off a Bulldog turnover that resulted in Bridget Donovan snapping a shot past Burt at 5:17.

The Spartans continued to swarm the Winthrop end but Burt held up the fort nicely until late in the first when Allison Butler picked up a loose puck and banked an acute angle backhander off Burt's pads and in for a 2-0 lead after one.

"The one thing we couldn't do is get behind early," Martucci said. "One goal was OK but two goals wasn't so good. That's like climbing a mountain against them."

An early Bulldog power play in the second went by the boards and the Spartans would strike a killing blow seconds after getting Sabrina Iannetti out of the box. Hannah Quin made a perfect length of the ice pass to Iannetti, who flipped a backhander over Burt's glove for her 13th goal of the season.

"Once we started getting our legs moving and skating, we were able to take control of the game a little bit," Pagliuca said.

The onslaught of shots continued throughout the middle period, where the Spartans finished with a 17-1 shots on goal advantage, and culminated with 1:16 left when Marisa Maccario banged in a third chance at Butler's initial shot to make it 4-0 after two..

The sophomore from Marblehead would cap the scoring in the third with a power play goal at 9:40, assisted by Donovan and Angela Dandreo.

"In a way, this is a good loss for us," Martucci said. "We had come in having won nine in a row and this kind of gets us back to reality a little bit. Now we just have to go out and take care of business in the rest of our games."

Girls hockey takes center stage today when Bulldogs plays St. Mary's

The Lady Bulldogs hockey team, a combination of Lynn, Winthrop and Saugus players, will take on the iron tonight when it faces St. Mary's, the Division 1 defending state champion, at Connery Rink.

The combine team lost its season opener against Shrewsbury and then won its next nine games. St. Mary's is 85-0-3 since its 2007 loss to Austin Prep and 106-2-4 since the 2006-2007 season. Winthrop coach Anthony Martucci knows his team has its work cut out making it 10 in a row.

"I think it's a privilege to have them on your schedule," Martucci said about St. Mary's. "They're definitely the premier team in girls high school hockey. It shows how far our program has come ... three years ago, it was never a thought that they would be on our schedule."

Martucci said his players are very excited to be playing St. Mary's, particularly the Lynn girls who have more of a connection with some of the Spartan players. Chelsey Bartlett, a forward for the Lady Bulldogs, played at St. Mary's as a freshman. St. Mary's player Madison Molea played for the combine team when she was at Pickering Middle School.

Two other Lynn girls have played key roles in the combine's success this season. Goalie Katie Burt has been stonewalling the opposition since she was a sixth grader at Pickering (she's now in the eighth grade) and Mackenzie Clark (English) racked up her 100th point earlier this year.

"Obviously Katie Burt has been our X factor in many games," Martucci said. "She's really been something else for us."

Martucci said Clark has also been immense.

"She's the straw that stirs the drink for us," he said. "Right now she has 19 points. She's playing really well. She's really become more of a complete player for us, getting some assists, her backchecking ..."

The Lady Bulldogs first line includes Clark and two Saugus players, Courtney McTague and Hannah Lopresti. The Saugus girls are new this year because Saugus had been skating in a combine with Gloucester.

The second line featured Anna Fucillo, Kara Donati (Saugus) and Bartlett. The third line has also done some damage with Caroline McKinnon, Amanda Cordes and either Flora English or Nicole Pucillo.

The Lady Bulldogs' defense can also pack a punch when it comes to scoring with Taylor Brown on the loose. Brown played for Austin Prep as a freshman before returning to Winthrop. She's been an all-star the last two years. Ariana Dembro and Julianna Kennedy are the second line defense and mixing in in varsity spots are Kassie Harris and Casey McNulty, both of Lynn.

Two years ago, the combine team reached the quarterfinals, where it lost to Woburn in a shootout. St. Mary's ended up playing Woburn later in the tournament. Last year, the Lady Bulldogs lost in the first round to Arlington Catholic.

Martucci said his first year coaching (three years ago), the team relied heavily on a solid group of five seniors. There were only 12 players on the team that year. Last year, middle school players in Winthrop were allowed to play and that brought up the numbers, but also made for a young team. This year, everyone's a year older and a little more seasoned. Martucci said he has 24 players on the team, 12 of them coming from Winthrop.

Today's game starts at 4 p.m.

Bulldogs 5, Wilmington 0

In Winthrop, five players scored and Katie Burt turned back 23 shots as the Bulldogs improved to 9-1-0. Taylor Brown (goal, assist), Chelsey Bartlett (goal, assist) and Mackenzie Clark (two assists) triggered the offense. Hannah LoPresti, Courtney McTague and Amanda Cordes also scored as the Bulldogs unloaded 52 shots on goal.

"We wore them down with our three lines. It's the fourth game in a row we've gotten a goal from our third line. We're playing really well at the right time," said coach Anthony Martucci.

Bulldogs 2, Springfield Cathedral 2

At Springfield Saturday, the combined Winthrop/Lynn/Saugus team pulled one out of the fire. Mackenzie Clark (English) scored late in the first period to give Winthrop a 1-0 lead, but Springfield Cathedral tied things up in the second period. Winthrop pulled out the win on a Taylor Brown goal midway through the final period. The combine team out-shot Springfield 47-21. Katie Burt had the win in net for Winthrop. She has a goals-against average of .75, which leads the Northeast division of the Girls Eastern Mass. Ice Hockey League.

Bulldogs 5 Shawsheen 0

The Lady Bulldogs (combined English, Classical, Winthrop and Saugus) girls hockey team is on a roll, picking up its seventh win in a row with a 5-0 shutout over Shawsheen Thursday at Larsen Rink.

"The girls are playing well," coach Anthony Martucci said. "They've rattled off seven in a row. They're developing a nice team chemistry with all the lines starting to play well together. We're getting scoring from all three lines and the defense is playing well, too."

Taylor Brown scored the first of her two goals in the first period with the assists going to Courtney McTague and Classical's Chelsey Bartlett. Bartlett made it 2-0 in the second period (Anna Fucillo, Kara Donati assists) and then the Lady Bulldogs blew things open with a big final period. Hannah Lopresti, Caroline McKinnon and Brown all found the net for the 5-0 final. McTague, English's Mackenzie Clark, Brown and Casey McNulty from Classical all picked up assists. Katie Burt of Lynn picked up the win in net.

The Lady Bulldogs are 7-1 with Springfield Cathedral on tap for Saturday.

Bulldogs cruise past Medford, win sixth straight

Since losing to Shrewsbury, 2-1, to begin this season, the Lynn  girls hockey team has been a team on a roll. Entering Saturday's game against Medford, the Bulldogs had won five straight times and had surrendered only four goals in the process.

By the time they left LoConte Rink, the win streak had reached six in a row as five different players recorded goals and Katie Burt had 22 saves in a 5-1 Bulldog win.

"We've played really well since the first game of the year," English coach Anthony Martucci said. "We were trying to find our chemistry in that first game but the girls have really played well from then on."

English (6-1) took an early 1-0 lead on Amanda Cordes' goal, assisted by Caroline McKinnon, before the Mustangs tied it up a minute later. Taylor Brown's goal at 11:33 of the period, assisted by Courtney McTague and Burt, sent the Bulldogs to the first intermission up a goal.

They fed off that momentum as MacKenzie Clark scored 50 seconds into the middle period, off McTague and Casey Harris helpers, to make it 3-1. English then put the game away in the third as Kara Donati and McKinnon scored goals.

Clark leads Bulldogs to victory

Mackenzie Clark was unstoppable again in the Bulldogs girls hockey team's 6-1 victory over Beverly at Connery Rink on Wednesday.

Clark scored twice and recorded two assists as English rolled against the Panthers.

"She's just an excellent player," Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci said. "This year, she's so much more complete than in the past. She's really starting to pass the puck."

Clark has 110 career points after last night's game.

For the Bulldogs (4-1), Courtney McTague scored the first two goals of the game early and also assisted on one other, while Hannah Lopresti assisted on three goals. Also scoring for English were Taylor Brown and Anna Fucillo, with Kasey Harris, Chelsey Bartlett, and Cat Salvetti chipping in assists.

Clark reaches milestone in Bulldogs girls hockey win

WINTHROP -- Lynn English's Mackenzie Clark will always remember the very special gift she gave herself for her 18th birthday.

Hitting that particular milestone this past Saturday, she reached the 100-point plateau midway through the opening stanza with the first of her two goals, as the Winthrop/Lynn English/Revere girls hockey team blanked Everett, 5-0, at the Larsen Arena.

"It's definitely one of my better birthdays," said Clark, who also plays soccer at English. "I just wanted to get it done, and I'm relieved to get it."

The Lady Bulldogs (2-1) attacked the Crimson Tide net right from the opening faceoff, but were thwarted by goalie Casarra Roderick. Defenseman Taylor Brown clanked a shot off the post early, but Roderick turned opportunities from defenseman Kasey Harris and winger Hannah Lopresti aside in the first few minutes.

However, Brown broke the scoreless tie with just over six minutes gone. She took a feed from teammate Kara Donati, and fired a 20-foot wrist shot past Roderick for the game's first goal.

Clark then attained her milestone just 46 seconds later. The Lady Bulldogs continued their assault upon the Everett net, and the team was able to double its lead. Skating in on a 2-on-1 with Lopresti, Clark took the feed and beat Roderick with a 15-foot wrist shot to give Winthrop a 2-0 edge.

"I skated in, and saw the open part of the net," Clark recollected of her 100th career point. "I didn't think it went in at first, and then everyone started celebrating."

Coach Anthony Martucci said, "When I first took the job (two years ago), I could tell right away how special a player Mackenzie was as a ninth grader. We put her on the second line to start with, and last year, she really came into her own. Her speed and strength are incredible, and she's one of the leaders on this year's team."

Clark added point No. 101 with 39 seconds gone in the middle period. She broke up a pass at the Everett (1-2) blue line, skated in on the breakaway, and stuffed a backhand past Roderick to increase the lead to 3-0.

Winger Courtney McTague netted a pair of third-period scores, exactly nine minutes apart (with the latter coming on the power play), to close out the scoring.

Goalie Katie Burt handed in the shutout, her first of the campaign.

"We didn't get off to a good start in our first game (a loss to Shewsbury), but we've been able to jell together as a team," added Martucci. "Tonight, we had a lot of (offensive) chances developing, and we played very well defensively. That's something that we pride ourselves on."

Bulldogs combined girls hockey team recovers nicely

The Winthrop Lady Bulldogs (combined Winthrop, Lynn and Saugus) girls hockey team rebounded from a tough loss over the weekend to defeat Marblehead, 5-3, at Larsen Rink

Marblehead drew first blood on a Rachel McKay goal midway through the first period, but the Lady Bulldogs answered with five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead into the third period.

Junior McKenzie Clark from Lynn English rang up her 99th career point on a goal with six minutes left in the opening period. Anna Fucillo made it 2-1 less than a minute later and Caroline McKinnon scored to give Winthrop a 3-1 lead after one period.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-1) added two more in the second period on a power play goal by Chelsey Bartless and one by Taylor Brown to take four-goal lead into the final period. Katie Zarinksy scored a pair of goals for the Magicians to close things out.

"After the first game, I think the rust was kind of off,"  coach Anthony Martucci said. "Tonight I thought we came out and executed our game plan a little better."

Winthrop/Lynn Girls Hockey sees Season End against Arlington Catholic

WINTHROP -- Winthrop/Lynn's girls hockey team ran into perennial powerhouse Arlington Catholic and had its season come to an abrupt end last night. The Bulldogs were shut out, 4-0.

"AC is a good team," Winthrop coach Anthony Martucci said. "We didn't execute the way I would have liked to. In fact, they did to us what I wanted to do to them. I wanted to push the puck and forecheck. My hat is off to them."

Katie Burt had a sensational game in net. She faced 44 shots, and turned away 40 of them. She made several sensational saves, including stopping a few breakaways.

"(Burt) is absolutely phenomenal," Cougars coach Kim Knox said. "We knew coming in how strong their goaltending was going to be. She truly is the backbone of that team."

Lindsey Barker proved to be a force on the ice for the 16th-ranked Bulldogs (9-4-6) in what will be her final varsity game. Fellow seniors Rachel Mailhiot and Kelly Deveney also had strong performances.

"We are going to miss our seniors," said Martucci. "They've been there since the inception of the program and are a great group."

Alyssa Sullivan scored a pair of goals and added an assist for 20th-ranked Arlington Catholic (12-7-2). Natalie Flynn and Michela Scutti scored the other two goals. Two of the goals came on the power play.

The game got a little chippy in the third. The Bulldogs were able to kill off a 5-on-3 power play.

The Cougars outshot Winthrop 44-to-18.

"Our offense didn't ever get going," said Martucci. "We're a young group, though, and we will have a lot of talent returning."

Mackenzie Clark finished the season with 97 career points as a sophomore.

In the North Cape League/Greater Boston League all-star game, the two teams skated to a 3-3 tie. Lynn's Katie Burt, Marblehead's Molly Depew and Beverly's Brianna Jackson each played a period in net. They each allowed a goal.

Kelly Deveney, of Classical, had a strong performance in her final varsity regular season game.

"Deveney is an excellent defenseman who we will miss next season," Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci said. Katie Burt turned away 26 shots.

Olivia Konaxis scored both goals for the Panthers.

"She just had a good game," Beverly coach Fiona Rice said. "She normally is picking up a lot of assists, but this time she was in front of the net and got the shots off."

Brianna Jackson made 24 saves.

"(Clark) has really been on a tear," Lynn coach Anthony Martucci said. "We had hoped that she would heat up and we're really glad that she started to right now as we head into the tournament."

Chelsey Bartlett scored a pair of goals and added a pair of assists. Lindsey Barker had a strong performance on senior night. She picked up a pair of assists. Fellow senior Rachel Mailhiot also had a strong game.

Katie Burt turned away 24 shots.

Bulldogs girls hockey skate past Everett

Winthrop-Lynn's girls hockey team got four goals and a pair of assists from Mackenzie Clark to skate past Everett 6-2.

"Mackenzie had a big game," Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci said. "She seems to have games like these where she just goes on a tear."

The six points give Clark 90 points for her career.

W-E also got goals from seventh grader Anna Fucillo and all-conference defenseman Taylor Brown.

Katie Burt had another strong performance in net for the Bulldogs (7-2-6).

"Katie is just a stud back there," Martucci said. "She gives us a lot of confidence back there. If we get a lead we're confident we won't lose it. If we're struggling, we're confident that she will keep us in the game."

Lynn/Winthrop girls hockey heading to playoffs !

The Lynn/Winthrop girls hockey team clinched a spot in the state tournament on Saturday, when the team skated to a 2-2 tie with Cambridge in Winthrop.

"Cambridge played a tough game," Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci said. "They are very physical and their goaltender is very solid."

The team outshot Cambridge 56-24 in the contest and got goals from
Chelsey Bartlett and defensemen Taylor Brown. It was Brown's 12th goal of the season. Sophomore Mackenzie Clark picked up an assist, which gives her 86 points for her career

It was the fourth time in six games that the Bulldogs (6-2-6) enjoyed a third-period lead.

Sixth-graders
Julianna Kennedy and Emma Rudser continued their strong defensive play. Katie Burt turned away 22 shots.

Girls Hockey Ties with Marblehead

WINTHROP -- With both squads trailing first-place Beverly/Gloucester by only a handful of points in the North Cape League, both the Marblehead and Winthrop/Lynn girls hockey teams were hoping for a win over one another -- not only to keep pace, but also to inch closer to a possible playoff berth.

The Headers and Lady Bulldogs, who had deadlocked each other 1-1 back in December, settled for the same result on Saturday evening -- a 1-1 tie.

This one occurred when Marblehead's Lexie Laing netted the tying score with only 36.1 seconds left to go in the contest at Larsen Arena.

Trailing 1-0 with 2:02 left, Marblehead, which had been frustrated by a very solid performance by Lady Bulldogs goalie Katie Burt, got a break when a pair of Winthrop/Lynn players were each assessed a penalty, giving the Headers a 5-on-3 power play advantage. Burt continued to hold Marblehead at bay, particularly on several point-blank opportunities from up close.

The Headers pulled goalie Molly Depew for an extra skater with 1:15 remaining and a 6-on-3 skater advantage. Burt came up with several big stops, as Marblehead continued to attack the net. It looked as though the Lady Bulldogs would emerge unscathed, yet with five seconds left on the power play (and 36 seconds left on the clock), Laing, who was positioned less than 10 feet in front of the net, took a pass from the left side from teammate Ally Healy, and she one-timed the puck past Burt for the game-tying score.

"We were able to move (Burt) laterally (on the goal), and Lexie (Laing) saw the open part of the net," said Marblehead coach Emily Hudak, whose club goes to 3-2-4 in the league (5-4-4 overall). "We played very well, and had our chances (throughout the game), but Katie's a great goalie, and made some great saves."

Marblehead carried the early play once the puck was dropped, but it would be Winthrop/Lynn that took the early lead, just five minutes in. Forward Amanda Cordes picked up a loose puck in the Headers zone, and poked it past Depew for the game's first score.

"We moved Amanda to forward (from defense), and we were throwing the puck to the net for a chance," said Winthrop/Lynn coach Anthony Martucci. "It was good to get that first goal, especially playing at home, as it creates a hill for the other team."

Cordes had another opportunity later in the period to add to the lead, stealing a puck at mid-ice and going in for a breakaway, but was stonewalled by Depew.

Marblehead's Kelsey Maguire had several chances to tie the game in the second period, but was thwarted by Burt each time. Maguire fired a point-blank slap from 15 feet away midway in the stanza, but Burt gloved the shot. A half-minute later, Burt again halted Maguire's slap to keep the 1-0 lead for the Lady Bulldogs.

Depew also came up big to keep the margin to one goal. She robbed center MacKenzie Clark and winger Lindsey Barker on back-to-back opportunities later in the period, with the Lady Bulldogs storming the net.

Burt was busiest late in the period, stopping Laing at point-blank range on a wrist shot, and then holding strong when Laing came in on a breakaway after stealing the puck at the Marblehead blue line. Burt also stuffed forward Keelin Fallon's opportunity near the end of the period when she tried to jam the puck past the sprawling goalie.

"Katie was incredible tonight," said Martucci of his netminder. "She's such a strong goalie, and she makes the hard saves look easy."

Both teams traded numerous scoring opportunities in the third, but Depew and Burt held strong to keep the 1-0 score intact until Laing's game-tying goal in the last minute.

Winthrop/Lynn girls hockey tops Wilmington

The Winthrop/Lynn girls hockey team has struggled a bit lately when it comes to finding the back of the net, but the drought ended in a big way Monday with a 7-1 win over Wilmington at Larsen Rink.

Mackenzie Clark of Lynn had the hot hand, scoring four goals, three of them in the first period. Katie Burt, also of Lynn, held down the fort in net.

"She (Clark) had a big night," coach Anthony Martucci said. "This was a nice breakout for us."

Martucci said his team hasn't had any trouble getting off shots, but not many have been finding their way between the pipes lately. Against Wilmington, the Winthop/Lynn team dominated play in the first period, taking a 6-1 lead into the locker room.

Winthrop/Lynn is now 4-2-4 overall and 3-0-4 in the North Cape League. Marblehead, a team Winthrop/Lynn tied the first time around, is up next.

The Winthrop/Lynn combined girls hockey team had a big night offensively

They defeated Peabody, 12-1, at Peabody. Junior Taylor Brown and sophomore Chelsey Bartlett had hat tricks for the Jets (3-0-4).

Lindsey Roy and Taylor Papasadora each had two assists, Ashley Melanson scored once and Ricki Gillis had an assist for Lynn. Goalie Katie Burt had 17 saves.

The Jets play at Springfield Cathedral today.

Bulldogs 0, Beverly 0

At Beverly, seventh-grader
Katie Burt was phenomenal in net, turning away all 29 shots that she faced. Senior captain Mackenzie Clark had a strong game for the Lady Bulldogs (2-0-1). English lost Lindsey Barker due to penalties.

"(Losing Barker) was a tough loss for us," English coach
Anthony Martucci said. "She does a lot of things well for us."

Another seventh-grader,
Caroline McKinnon, had a very strong performance on the penalty kill.

Brianna Jackson played very well in net for Beverly.

Item roundup:

The combined Lynn/Winthrop/Revere girls hockey team is 2-0 thanks to a 3-1 win over Everett Thursday at Larsen Rink in Winthrop.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out quickly when Anna Fucillo, a Winthrop seventh-grader, scored 1:42 into the game.
Taylor Brown made it 2-0 early in the second period, but Everett retaliated 18 seconds later on a goal by Christine Hogan. Chelsey Bartlett nailed down the win for the combined team with the assists going to Mackenzie Clark and Lindsay Barker, who also assisted on the first goal. Amanda Cordes, Fucillo and Nicole Flores also picked up assists.

"So far, so good," coach Anthony Martucci said. "We're getting good leadership from the seniors."

Katie Burt, a seventh-grader at Pickering Middle School, had another solid outing in net with 26 saves. The Lady Bulldogs peppered the Everett keeper with 34 shots. Lynn plays Beverly Saturday in Gloucester.

Winthrop/Lynn girls hockey looking for another strong season

By Joyce Erekson / The Daily Item

December 2, 2009

Last year, the English High girls hockey team served notice it was a force to be reckoned with when it finished 16-5 and reached the Division 1 North quarterfinals in the state tournament.

A few things have changed this season. The team, which is a combination of Winthrop, Classical, English and Revere players, is now called the Winthrop Lady Bulldogs because Winthrop is the host school. Also, five players who were key to the team's success have either graduated or transferred to other schools. What hasn't changed, however, is coach Anthony Martucci's optimism that the team will once again be in the mix when it comes to the postseason.

Although the forward lines and the defensive pairings will look a little different this year, the person between the pipes will be the same.
Katie Burt, who was in net for all 16 wins, is back and she's still only a seventh-grader at Pickering Middle School .

"I think with Katie in net and the players we have, we'll have another strong season. Our first hope is getting nine wins and making the tournament," Martucci said.

Winthrop has the largest number of players with eight. That number could go up if the sixth-graders from its middle school are allowed to play. Lynn has seven players and Revere has one.

Martucci lost all-conference player Vanessa Caruccio, Ashley Fiandaca, Adriana Russell and Candace Kirk to graduation. Madison Molea, a ninth-grader, transferred to St. Mary's. Martucci got in several new players and saw the return of sophomore Chelsey Bartlett, who was at St. Mary's last year, but played as an eighth-grader at Pickering two years ago.

Martucci's returning contingent includes Taylor Brown, who scored 16 goals playing defense. She's a junior from Winthrop and an assistant captain. Senior captain Lindsay Barker, also from Winthrop , gives the team a lift up front as well. She racked up 22 goals last year.

English High sophomore Mackenzie Clark will also provide an offensive spark. She had 16 goals and 36 points last year. Martucci said Bartlett will also be in the first line with Taylor Papsadora and Caroline McKinnon also figuring in the mix. Look for senior Rachel Mailhot to skate wing.
Classical's Kelly Deveney will move from forward to defense, where she'll be joined by another former forward, Amanda Cordes.

Among the other players figuring in the mix on the forward lines will be Annie Mahoney, seventh-grader Anna Fucillo, eighth-grader
Ashley Melanson ( Pickering ), freshman Casey McNulty (Classical), Lindsay Roy (English) and Jess Rogowitz, a junior from Winthrop .

English Girls Oust Masco in Shootout

WINTHROP n Nine rounds into the shootout, it was over, and the English girls hockey team was left standing.

Madison Molea scored her first goal of the season as player No. 9 in the shootout, which gave No. 7 English a 1-0 win over 10th-seeded Masco in a Division 1 first-round game at Larsen Rink on Thursday.

This was the third meeting this season between the North Cape League co-champs, who split a pair during the regular season n 3-1, English, on Jan. 2, and 2-1, Masco, on Feb. 12. This one was a goaltending clinic between sixth-grader Katie Burt of English and eighth-grader Alex Jones of Masco.

“All I can say is that as soon as we got into the shootout, I knew we were going to win because I have so much confidence in Katie,” said English coach Anthony Martucci, whose team plays Woburn next on Sunday.

But it took a lot of time to get to the shootout n three scoreless periods of regulation, plus one scoreless overtime session. It was after regulation ended that things got extra dramatic.

Start with what happened at the 7:44 mark of overtime. Right off a face-off, Masco got the puck into the English zone and put a shot on net. Burt deflected it into the boards. Masco got the puck again 10 feet in front of the net. Burt made a glove save falling down.

“That took about five years off my life,” Martucci said. “(It is) all about defense and goaltending come tournament time. If you can do those two things well, you can win.”

But English also had to score. And that happened in the shootout … not before some more anxious moments, though.

Masco, as the visiting team, shot first, and Hannah Koenig connected, solving Burt by shooting under her glove. That put Masco ahead 1-0. English didn’t score until two shots later, when Barker found the net under Jones’ glove.

Then, in the ninth round, Molea (the daughter of English athletic director Gary Molea) sent the English faithful home happy when she directed the puck into the net high and to the right. (Many previous English attempts were low and to the right.)

“I’m proud of each and every one of my girls,” Masco coach Bill Haines said. “It’s too bad, because shootouts are a lousy way to determine a champion, but those are the rules we play by.”

Haines added, “(Jones) played with tremendous poise. She’s been great all year. She’s capable of making big saves, which you saw tonight, because she was at her finest.”

English improved to 16-4 with the win, while Masco finishes 14-4-4.

Goalie Burt Earns Shutout in First Postseason Game

WINTHROP -- English goalie Katie Burt may only be in the sixth grade scholastically, but on the hockey rink, she continues to prove she belongs playing against high school competition.

The all-star keeper was a major factor in English's 14-4 regular-season record -- which earned the team a 7th seed in the MIAA Division 1 girls hockey tournament -- and in a 4-0 victory over 26th-seeded Shrewsbury in Round 1 last night at Larsen Rink in Winthrop.

"She's performing like a senior," said Bulldog (15-4) coach Anthony Martucci. "I couldn't ask for anything more from her. A shutout is a nice way to start her postseason career."

The Bulldogs will next play 10th-seeded Masconomet, which defeated Beverly 4-1, on Thursday in Winthrop.

When a team is held scoreless, the majority of the praise is showered upon the goalie, and while Burt is deserving, a fair share of the credit must also be awarded to the English defense. Led by all-stars Ashley Fiandaca and Taylor Brown, the Bulldogs limited the Colonials to 22 shots, a miniscule amount of serious scoring chances, and a power outage on the power play. English killed five penalties, including 50 seconds of a five-on-three.

"Their defense was making it hard for us, but I thought we were in the game the whole time," said Shrewsbury (10-8) coach Frank Panarelli. "The first time we played English, we lost 6-0, and it was 5-0 after the first period. We only skated 11 girls tonight, and for a first year program who most thought wouldn't win more than a couple games, to make the state tournament, I'm very proud."

Sophomore Stephanie Folsom stopped 27 shots in net for Shrewsbury, but she couldn't completely withstand the Bulldogs' attack. With 11:58 remaining on the clock in the first period, Vanessa Caruccio scored her first of two goals when she tipped the puck past Folsom on the feed from Lindsey Barker.

Brown scored her team's second goal of the night unassisted after maneuvering the puck the majority of the ice before ripping a wrister just outside the left face-off circle. The shot appeared to initially be saved, but it squirted loose from between Folsom's arm and side and fell into the net 4:36 into the second period.

"I thought we came out a bit sloppy in the first period," Martucci said. "It's tourney time, so every team comes out wanting to win, but we pulled away due to some great senior leadership."

Still leading 2-0 entering the third, the Bulldogs continued to keep possession at will. English didn't capitalize until the 5:42 mark, when Mackenzie Clark poked home the puck on an assist from Barker, and Caruccio sealed the game with a breakaway slapper that beat Folsom low glove side unassisted with 3:03 left to go in the game.

Item Roundup:

English 10, Wilmington 2

At Ristuccia Rink on Wednesday, the English girls exacted a little payback on the team that spoiled their perfect 6-0 record earlier in the season. In the first meeting, Wilmington won 3-1 despite coming into the game with only one win.

The first period was close, with English taking a 2-1 lead on goals by Lindsey Barker and Mackenzie Clark, the first of three for the freshman, who also had two assists.

The Bulldogs put on a show in a five-goal second period. Taylor Brown, Barker (2 goals), Ashley Petrello, Kelly Deveney and Rachel Mailhot (2 goals) all lit the lamp. Wilmington got one back 45 seconds into the third period, but English responded with three more, one from Mailhot and two by Clark. Mailhot ended up leaving the game with a concussion and, according to Martucci, will likely miss the next week or so. Katie Burt was in net for the win.

With a 12-2 record, the Bulldogs have already qualified for the tournament. Although they thought they would be playing Division 2, Martucci said the team has been moved up to Division 1 for tournament purposes by the MIAA.

English 10, Peabody 0

At Connery Rink in Lynn, the Bulldogs (11-2) had two players with hat tricks: Adriana Russell and Lindsey Barker. Russell also had an assist. Vanessa Caruccio had a goal to go with her four assists. Seventh grader Ashley Melanson added an outstanding shorthanded goal.

Sixth grader Katie Burt, picked up her third shut out of the season.

English Qualifies for Tournament with Win

English High is back in the state tournament after missing the cut last year thanks to a 7-1 win over Cambridge Monday at Larson Rink in Winthrop.

The Bulldogs (9-2) got things going on a Lindsey Barker goal 2:17 into the game, but Cambridge came back to tie the game before the first intermission. It was all Bulldogs in the second with goals by Vanessa Caruccio, Taylor Brown and Adriana Russell. Mackenzie Clark assisted on the first two and then scored the first goal of the third period to put the Bulldogs up 5-1. She finished with a goal and three assists.

Ashley Petrillo and Taylor Brown accounted for the final two English goals. Brown, a defenseman, has 10 goals this season. Ashley Fiandaca picked up three assists and Katie Burt had another solid game in net for the Bulldogs.

Beverly 1, English 0

At Winthrop, the combined Beverly/Saugus/Danvers/Gloucester team (5-2-1) got a goal from Allyson Spencer off a Clare Leathersich assist with 11:30 left in the game. Brianna Jackson made 25 saves for Beverly, while Katie Burt stopped 24 shots for English (8-2).

Caruccio Scores Four Times as  Girls Hockey Defeats Marblehead

By Jonathan Weiner / For The Item, Sunday, January 11, 2009

SALEM -- After defeating the Marblehead girls hockey squad on Friday evening at Connery Rink, Lynn English skated over to Rockett Arena on Saturday for the back end of the home-and-home series. The Bulldogs received a personal-best four-goal performance from forward Vanessa Caruccio in a 4-1 victory.

"I may have finished them (the goals) off, but it was a team effort," said the senior, who comes from Winthrop to play for the co-op club. "Katie (Burt) made the saves in net, and everyone played great."

Her coach was the proud recipient of Caruccio's goal-scoring.

"She's a great leader, and a good voice in the locker room," said Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci. "My wife coaches girls soccer (at Winthrop High), and as soon as I saw how Vanessa played soccer, I knew she would playing hockey the same way."

Right from the opening faceoff, English (7-1) attacked the Marblehead end, only to be thwarted by goalie Moe Bradley. Defenseman Madison Molea fired off a wrist shot from the left point that was kicked aside in the early moments.

Caruccio put English on the board soon after, picking up a loose puck around center ice. She skated into the Marblehead zone, around the net from the left side, then back out near the Headers' blue line. As players set themselves into position, she fired a short slap that beat Bradley to the far left side for the game's first goal.

"I've been trying to teach the kids how to walk out from in back of the net with the puck," said Martucci. "Though it wasn't exactly the way I drew it up, Vanessa did it well, resulting in the goal."

The Bulldogs continued to plague the Marblehead zone, adding more opportunities to their game. Winger Rachel Mailhot fired a slap that was gloved by Bradley. Burt was just as strong, making back-to-back rapid-fire saves off forwards Lauren Turner and Keelin Fallon to keep the English lead intact.

The Headers ended the period with a last-minute flurry upon the English net, yet Burt proved true to the test, stonewalling Marblehead and keeping the club off the board.

The Bulldogs came out the same way as they had done to begin the game. However, Bradley was just as solid, stopping a MacKenzie Clark blast after she had skated in, held the puck, and fired from 15 feet away.

Marblehead had its chances moments later to tie the game, but defenseman Kathryn Homan and forward Ally Healy were denied by Burt, who made stick saves on both shots to keep the 1-0 score intact.

That would soon change midway through the stanza, courtesy of Caruccio. She took a feed from teammate Adriana Russell on a 2-on-1, skated in, and eluded the Marblehead defender. Caruccio then shifted to her backhand, sliding the puck past Bradley to increase the score to 2-0.

"She's obviously a huge threat," Marblehead coach Emily Hudak said. "She had two of the goals against us on Friday (in a 3-1 English victory), and you have to be aware of her at all times."

Marblehead's Taylor Maag brought the Headers (3-3-1) to within 2-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the period, as she skated into the Bulldogs end, and flicked off a wrist shot from 15 feet away that found its way past Burt for the score.

With 40 seconds left, Marblehead went on the power play advantage, which it carried into the beginning of the final stanza. Burt held the Headers at bay, though with seven seconds left in the initial penalty, English was whistled for another infraction, creating another power play opportunity for Marblehead. The Headers couldn't do anything with that chance, either. Minutes later, English was called for penalties only 21 seconds apart, and Marblehead had another opportunity to tie the game. The best chance that the Headers had was when forward Britani Dunbar ricocheted a shot off the far post late in the power play that bounced wide.

"What would have been most frustrating is if we didn't have any opportunities at all on them," said Hudak. "We were hitting them off posts, and there were loose pucks in the crease that we either couldn't get to or couldn't push into the net."

Martucci was more than effusive about his penalty killers.

"I can't say any more about Katie," said the coach. "She made save after save. (Right wing) Ashley Petrillo did an excellent job, playing very disciplined and smart, as did (left wing) Kelly Devenney."

Caruccio finished off her hat trick midway through the period, skating in on a 2-on-1, once again getting past the Marblehead defenseman, and slipping the puck past Bradley.

The Headers pulled Bradley for the extra attacker with just over a minute remaining, and Caruccio completed the scoring with an empty net goal just 47 seconds from the finish.

English 3, M'head 1

At Connery Rink, the Bulldogs (6-1) won despite falling behind early in the second period.

"It was a great up-and-down game," said Bulldog coach Anthony Martucci. "Our first line of
Vanessa Caruccio, Lindsay Barker and Andriana Russell was very productive."

Barker had a pair of goals, while Caruccio scored a goal and added an assist.
Ashley Fiandaca picked up an assist from her defensemen position.

The defensive quartet of
Madison Mollea, Candice Kirk, Fiandaca and Taylor Brown continued their strong play in front of goaltender Katie Burt, who turned away 27 shots.

Wilmington 3, English 1

At Connery Rink, the Bulldogs were undefeated heading into the game, but Wilmington's Kelly Brandano rained on their parade, scoring all three goals for the Wildcats.

"Wilmington came out and took it to us," English coach Anthony Martucci said.

Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the first period, only to see English's Taylor Brown tie the game early in the second. Brandano notched the game-winner late in the period and then added a little insurance with a goal in the third period.

Lynn goalie Katie Burt had a busy night, stopping 35 shots. The Bulldogs had plenty of scoring chances of their own, but Wilmington goalie Amelia Woodbury turned away 35 shots. Lynn is 5-1 with Marblehead on tap for Friday at Connery Rink (5).

English Girls Hockey Defeats Algonquin

December 28, 2008

LYNN -- Perhaps one of the best-kept secrets in the city is the Lynn English girls hockey squad, comprised of players from English, Classical, Winthrop, and Revere. The Bulldogs took an unbeaten record into Saturday evening's affair with Algonquin, and remained so afterwards, defeating the Tomahawks, 4-1, at Connery Rink.

English showed how tenacious it was right from the opening faceoff, continually attacking the Algonquin (1-2-1) end throughout (the Bulldogs outshot the Tomahawks, 53-19). Winger Rachel Mailhot had the team's first good attempt within the first minute with a 25-foot slap that was gloved by goalie Caitryn Murphy. Yet English didn't waste any time in netting the game's first score.

Left wing Amanda Cordes positioned herself to the right of the Tomahawks' net, and it worked perfectly, as she took a feed from teammate Kelly Deveney, knocking the puck past Murphy just over two minutes in for a 1-0 lead.

"We work on positioning all the time (in practice)," said English coach Anthony Martucci. "Amanda was at the right place at the right time."

The Bulldogs (3-0) had ample opportunities to increase their lead, but were thwarted constantly by Murphy. Defenseman Taylor Brown was stopped on a point-blank slap midway through the stanza, and teammate Madison Molea was robbed moments later after she skated down the right side and fired a strong wrist shot that was gloved by Murphy.

Bulldogs goalie Katie Burt was just as effective, as she halted winger Amanda Yee on a breakaway shortly after the English goal. Late in the period, she stopped a point-blank blast by center Kathleen Clark that was labeled for the top left corner.

"It's good to know that we have a goalie back there that's unflappable," Martucci said of Burt. "She made several strong stops, and played solidly."

As it did in the first period, English came out strong for the middle stanza, taking the play to Algonquin, resulting in a goal. Molea beat Murphy just 50 seconds into the period with a slap from the left point after taking a pass from teammate Ashley Fiandaca, increasing the lead to 2-0.

The Bulldogs had chances minutes later to add to their advantage, but Murphy robbed Cordes and Mailhot on consecutive chances from in front. Murphy also halted a slap from winger Adriana Russell later in the period to keep English at bay.

"We've been in the high 30s in shots (in the previous two games), and we had quite a number of them tonight," said Martucci. "Some weren't quality, but we had many good ones, and we also ran into a tough goalie (Murphy)."

One shot that Murphy couldn't stop came late in the period. Right wing Lindsay Barker picked up a loose puck in the Bulldogs' end, and skated down the right side of the ice into Algonquin territory. She moved in on the Tomahawks' net, and stuffed the puck past Murphy for a 3-0 advantage.

"We always work on carrying the puck, and Lindsay did a great job doing so, using her speed as well on that goal," Martucci said.

Center MacKenzie Clark scored just 42 seconds into the final period for a 4-0 English edge. Late in the period, English found itself in a 5-on-3 disadvantage for 70 seconds, and the team killed it successfully.

The Tomahawks broke the shutout bid late in the contest, with winger Andrea Fahey beating Burt from in front.
