Girls Tennis Rams Making Positive Strides

reprinted from the Lynn Journal, 5/12/09

With a roster featuring a disproportionate number of underclassmen, the Lynn Classical girls tennis team has frequently found itself playing against teams with major advantages in terms of experience. The Rams have experienced the standard growing pains of a young team en route to a 1-5 start, but head coach Tom Clark is pleased with the growth and determination exhibited by his players, and said the team has maintained a positive attitude throughout the learning experience.  “There’s generally a lot of smiles on their faces,” said Clark. “They seem to be enjoying what they’re doing, and they’re getting better and better as the season goes along.”

The Rams competed hard against a quality opponent in Swampscott High on and got a win in one of the five individual matches they played. The lone victory belonged to freshman Saska Icitovic and senior Davey Chheon, who won the No. 2 doubles match in straight sets. The pair edged out their opponents in a tiebreaker to take the first set 7-6 before dominating the second set 6-3 to close out the match. Classical has one team win in five matches this season. The victory came at home on April 17 against Salem High. The meet included many highlights for the Rams, including an impressive win by freshman Amy O’Brien in the No. 3 singles match and a win for Jessie Carradeno in the No. 2 singles match.

Carredeno and fellow senior Sochitta Men have earned praise from Coach Clark for taking a leadership role as co-captains while still learning the game in their second season of tennis.  “They’re both very good leaders,” he said. “They started playing the game last year, but they seem to be picking up the game pretty well. They’re very good with the younger players and are trying to show them the ropes of the game.”
