Classical football celebrates season at banquet

LYNN - Lynn Classical's football team celebrated its 8-3 season with a banquet Monday night at the school's cafeteria.

The Rams, under the direction of third-year coach
Tim Phelps, fought Gloucester for most of the season for supremacy in the Northeastern Conference/North division before falling to the Fishermen in their next-to-last game of the season. Classical went on to lose to English on Thanksgiving.

The Rams placed three players on the Item All-Star football team --
Danny Omoregie, Buddy Ford and Josh Cheever -- and each won one of the prestigious awards given out.

All Classical's major awards are named after distinguished alumni, and Omoregie won the Harry Agganis Award, named for the fabled "Golden Greek" who was voted the best athlete in Lynn history in an Item turn-of-the-century survey.

Ford won the Gerald LeBrasseur Ironman award. LeBrasseur, who was a lineman for Classical in the 1950s, was on hand to present the award. He is the lone survivor among the alumni for whom the awards are named.

Cheever received the Boley Dancewicz All-American award. Dancewicz, one of Classical's best athletes ever, attended Notre Dame after graduating and later played pro football for the old Boston Yanks.

Other awards went to:
Jeff Beck, scout team award; Eric Sisson, George Moriarty Commitment and Dedication Award; Tylor Alicudo, Bill Joyce Sportsmanship Award; Nick Grassa, Abel Marquez Leadership Award; Craig Kanyangarara, Hammer of the Year Award; and Calvin Ebieshuwa, Harold Durgin Memorial Award.

Pat Finnigan (freshman), Joe Rose (sophomore), Malcolm Leng-King (junior) and Sam Rios (senior) were recognized as scholar-athletes.

Sub-varsity awards: Freshmen:
Brad Scuzzarella, top offensive player; Tyler Lovett, top defensive player; Petro Khieu, top lineman; JV: Jalen Brown, top offensive player; Steve Sam, top defensive player; Astrel Fort, top lineman.
