Asian Gangs Hurting Community
Editorial Opinion, The Lynn Journal, 5/11/05
Asian gangs and their rising propensity to wreak
havoc on their own people has caused the police department to hoist the red
warning flag.
And don’t believe for a second that because you live in a nice home off Route
107, where there is no gang activity, that you are safe.
You aren’t safe when gangs run rampant, because when that type of lawlessness
is allowed to exist, it inevitably spills over and causes lawlessness where
you’d least expect it.
Presently, local law enforcement officials are making the claim that Asian gang
violence against other Asians is reaching epidemic proportion – and that the
violence inflicted without much thought or fear of being apprehended and brought
to justice shows the need to upgrade the city’s effort in keeping Asian gang
members under control and within the grasp of the law.
Mayor Edward “Chip” Clancy and Police Chief John Suslak have yet to hold
some kind of summit regarding the city’s rising gang problem.
The chief’s tendency is to tell the mayor he needs more money to hire more men
or pay the necessary overtime to keep men on the streets and chasing the gangs.
The mayor has very little in the way of money to offer the chief.
The mayor will likely tell the chief to create new and improved work rotations
so the maximum number of officers are fighting the greatest law enforcement
problems.
With the problem intensifying and the summer nearly upon us, something must be
done to stem the tide of angry gang violence against Asian community members.
