LYNN - The two highest-ranked students at Lynn Classical High School undoubtedly have bright futures ahead of them.

Seniors Mina Healey and Gabriella Galeazzi are ranked No. 1 and 2 out of their class of 252 and were recently recognized by the Lynn School Committee for their outstanding academic achievements.

Both of the students have Grade Point Averages higher than a 4.0 and have been accepted at multiple prestigious colleges and universities.

Healey was recently accepted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and plans on attending the school to study Architecture. She has a GPA of 4.56.

“I feel like studying hard now will pay off for the future,” says Healey. “Why should I slack off when I’m able to get good grades?”

Healey received gold medals on the Latin I and Latin II exams her sophomore and junior years and stands as the president of the National Honors Society.

“My favorite subjects in school are Latin and Calculus,” she said, adding that school has always been important to her.

“In elementary and middle school, (school) wasn’t too hard. It was fun and I liked to learn,” she said. “In high school the work got harder, so it wasn’t exactly ‘fun’, but I still love learning.”

Through her participation in the Classical High School College Bowl trivia team, Healey has participated in monthly competitions and attended the annual Blue Lobster Bowl at M.I.T.

She is also the president of the Classical High School Key Club, where she participates in volunteering at My Brother’s Table, Bridgewell dances for individuals with disabilities and other challenges, and at the Tree of Life Pantry.

With her impressive academic achievements, involvement in after-school clubs and activities and volunteer work, it’s a wonder how Healey has any time for herself.

“I actually procrastinate a lot, so I find time for myself through that,” she says laughing, adding that her approach to learning helps reduce the amount of time she spends studying.

“I try to pay attention intently during class and learn it then, so when it comes time to study, I just have to refresh my memory rather than teach it to myself.”

Healey also spends time at RAW Artworks in Lynn. “I go to RAW Artworks for film school,” she said. “I love learning about films and making films.”

Aside from Healey’s stellar academic career, she’s still your typical teenage girl at heart.

“I love shopping and fashion,” she says. “And going to the movies!”

Galeazzi also has a GPA of 4.56 and is ranked second in the class of 252.

She has applied to more than 10 colleges and universities and has been accepted at St. Anselm’s College and Quinnipiac University. She says she’s waiting to hear back from other schools before making a decision.

“I have not decided where I am attending yet,” says Galeazzi. “But I plan on majoring in Psychology or Nursing.”

Aside from her academic achievements, Galeazzi has made quite a name for herself athletically.

She received the Scholar Athlete Award her freshman year for basketball and the Coach’s Award her junior year. She has played on the varsity soccer team since freshman year and was captain her junior and senior years.

She says staying involved in school and athletics “keeps her going.”

“I like to be as involved as I can,” says Galeazzi. “It always keeps me on my feet. I put in 110 percent effort Monday through Friday. But once the weekend or a vacation comes around, I put the books aside and give myself some ‘me’ time.”

Galeazzi is a member of the National Honors Society, Student Government and is on Student Council. She is also participates in the Classical High School College Bowl team and is a member of the Key Club and the History Club.

She says finding a balance between her academics and her social life is the key to her success.

“On the weekends I hang out with my friends or just relax until Monday comes around,” says Galeazzi.

“I like to have that separation between school life and my social life. It keeps my stresses down as well.”

Galeazzi says school has always been a top priority for her and adds that the future is part of her motivation.

Josh Cheever heading to St. Anselm College

Classical High defensive lineman Josh Cheever is heading to St. Anselm College.

Cheever, who was named to The Item All-Star Football Team last fall, signed a letter of intent last week to play football for the Hawks.

As a senior, the 6-2, 230-pound tackle had 51 tackles (12 solo), 4.5 sacks and three pass deflections. He was a Northeastern Conference All-Star his junior and senior year.

Cheever, who is also a key player on the Classical High basketball team, said he was drawn to St. Anselm because of its strong criminal justice program, which he said is something he has been interested in since he was a little kid. He also liked the coaching staff and the players.

"I liked everything about the atmosphere," Cheever said. "It was really tough (making a decision). It's not just those four years, it's the rest of your life. You can't just think football. You have to think about the academics."

Cheever said he played some Pop Warner football when he was younger, but never really liked it. He always considered himself a basketball player, but once he hit high school football, things changed.

"The last few years, I just fell in love with it (football)," he said.

Cheever said he started thinking about college football after his junior year when he started hearing from some coaches. Cheever said he also looked at Bentley University, Stonehill College, Merrimack College and Framingham State before making a decision.

"It's a beautiful campus," Cheever said, adding that he also likes the location of St. Anselm (Manchester, NH) because it will allow him to get home on long weekends if he wants to and it will enable his parents to come to some of his games, home and away.

Classical football coach Tim Phelps thinks St. Anselm will be a good fit for Cheever.

"He's a smart kid, in the classroom and football-wise," Phelps aid.

Phelps said he's a natural on the defensive line, but he also has the ability to play on the offensive line. Phelps said most importantly, Cheever cares about his academics.

"He's looking for an education. Football is very important to him, but it's secondary to his education," Phelps said. "I think it's a good fit."

Cheever won't be the only Classical High athlete heading to St. Anselm in the fall. Softball and basketball standout Hannah Byrne has also said she'll likely be heading there as well. She plans to play softball.
