BREAKDANCING CLUB  2008-09

This crew is definitely meant to perform. They were exciting at the Thanksgiving Pep Rally.

We will see them again this school year.

2006-2007

Breakdancing is back this year with Mr Hayward as advisor. Come down and join us in the gym every Thursday after school. We play, we practice, and we will perform during the school year.

---------------------------

Breakdancing first appeared in the South Bronx back in the 70's. Performers danced on flattened cardboard boxes, which they spread on the sidewalk, turning the pavement into a stage. They mixed aerobatics with martial arts and disco dancing, and each performer worked up his own specialty. Breaking ultimately replaced fighting, with the old fashioned violent rumble giving way to dance competition. Now it is a personal way to get in shape and have fun!

The breakdancers at Lynn Classical High, are very talented and enthusiastic when it comes to performing. These breakers include :        Tonah Ep,  Trung Danh ,   Duy Tran ,   Suphout Nop Eddie Lim ,   Billy Dum and Sorath R .

This group has been together for over two years as a “crew”. I asked them a few questions and here they are:

A-    Why do you all break dance?

B-    It’s a hobby, a lifestyle, and a form of expression.

A-    What do you get out of doing this?

B-    We love to entertain people and we love it because it’s a good way of keeping in shape.

A-    Is it difficult to learn?

B-    Yes.

A-    How difficult?

B-    Very.

A-    How long did it take you all to learn how to dance?

B-    Since middle school. That’s about it for all of us.

A-    What kind of music can you break dance to?

B-    Anything such as hip-hop, jazz, techno, etc.

A-    Well thank you for your time and good luck in the Talent Jam.

B-    Thank you.

Looking to channel their creative and physical energy, students formed Classical's first ever Break-dancing club last  fall.  The energy of Richard Nguyen, Jose Rodriguez, Thonah Ep, Billy Dum, Soksaran Roeung, Bunrith Ros, Duy Tram, Eddie Lim, Sophout Nop, Carl San, Sophout Nop, Surath Roeung,  Mervin Walsh and Phont Nop has sparked student and teacher interest in breaking.  With weekly meetings, the Bai-Cha Breakers promote the enjoyment and history of break dancing and Hip-Hop culture at Classical High School.  Breaking has enjoyed a comeback as the club performed at the Thanksgiving Football Pep Rally, Alumni Reception and dedication of Classical High School, JBSG Raw Talent Jam, and the Asian American Assembly.  We are excited about this year and the possibilities of sponsoring Break competitions for the city of Lynn in connection with Upward Bound.
