Black History Month Assembly
Kudos go out to Mr. Smith for his planning and directing of the Assembly this morning. The emphasis of the program was on Martin Luther King's (MLK) speeches and the injustice of Racism in the 1950's and 1960's.A poem written by Maya Anjelou and read by Cassandra Murkison made for a poignant moment. A number of students told the story of important Civil Rights moments in time. The Classical Chorus then performed some beautiful songs. After a video presentation on MLK, a group of Drama students recreated the Back of the Bus, the Whites Only Restaurant, and the Integration of Schools skits. Through these short skits, the anxiety, ignorance, and hate encountered as desegregation became the law of the land in the USA. Principal White closed the Assembly with a personal story that occurred in the South when he was a college football player.
