Classical High Latin Students Win Eleven Gold Medals On National Latin Exam !

On March 14th every Latin student at Classical High took the National Latin Exam. The 36 Latin scholars faced a tough exam with forty questions testing their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary and their ability to read passages of Latin at sight. Over 130,000 students take the exam each year. It is like an Olympic contest for Latin students.

The 36 students won 25 awards. On the Latin 1 exam, Brianna Garrity, John Grocki, Briana Galeazzi, Rosalynn Lim, Cristian Lopez and Uthai Vongsavanh won gold medals. On the Latin 2 exam, Amy Bourgeois, Cynthia Columbus, Bria Mazige, Kevin Mazige and Diana Tran won gold medals.

Gold medal winners had to score at least 36 answers correct out of forty. Brianna Garrity and Rosalynn Lim had perfect scores of forty out of forty. The next level of awards,

Silver medals, went to six Classical students: Jelyssa Alouidor, Dan Duong, Claude Jean, Casey Johnson, Jennifer Murray, and Meilyn Santamaria.

Magna cum laude certificates were won by Conor Donovan, Abigail Field, Afroditi Hontzeas, and Peter Rondeau.

Cum laude certificates went to Jared Fay, Kimberly Sandiford, Joleen Satterwhite and Sararith Roeung.

The eleven students who did not win awards scored close to the national average which was 28 correct out of forty. Language Chairperson, Jacqueline Harrington, encouraged students to take the exam by finding the money to pay all costs.

First year Latin teacher, Dan McNeill, is thoroughly pleased by the results and is convinced that Classical students have the desire and the intelligence to continue to prove that Classical High is as great a place now to study Latin as it was in the past during its long history fostering excellent Latin students.

The Foreign Language Department encourages a cultural and humanistic approach to the study of foreign language as the best means of expanding communication and understanding among the many people who make up the community of nations, be it at home or abroad.

Since language is an integral part of culture, one must be familiar with a particular language in order to be familiar with the culture of people who speak it.  Language is basic to mutual understanding.

Understanding is synonymous with humanitarianism.  Once the student understands the man of the culture, he will better understand the expression of his desires, attitudes, aspirations and tribulations.

From the study of a foreign language and culture, the student will acquire a better understanding of his own language and culture and of himself and his place in society.  Understanding will lead him to creativity -- to a better society for himself and for his fellow man.
