Production Roles In The TV. Studio
PRODUCER:
Responsible for ALL aspects of production.
In charge of pre-production planning.
Selects crew & talent:
Reserves studio/equipment
Does any promotion for show.
Communicates ideas for production to Director.
DIRECTOR:
Translates Producer's ideas. to picture and sound. Takes over for actual production.
Supervises all crew for actual production.
Writes our running order, shot sheets for camera people,
Script & storyboard (if also acting as scriptwriter).
Assists Set Designer with floor plan
Instructs VTR Operator and Character Generator Operator.
SCRIPTWRITER:
Works with Producer to develop script
Does actual writing of all the dialogue
TALENT: Confers with Producer/Scriptwriter/Director to understand their role.
Assistant Producer or Assistant Director rehearses them.
Must be familiar with hand signals, for cues on set.
Should react to guests, appear as if in conversation.
FLOOR DIRECTOR:
Responsible for all activity on the set.
Makes sure set is built, set up, and struck after production.
Cues talent, gives time cues to talent.
Receives all instructions from Director on headset. Changes set, talent, guests during production, if necessary.
- Oversees & approves set & lighting design.
- Must know use of hand signals & cue cards.
- Must be familiar with production script.
- Assists any other crew person on floor that needs him/her i.e.., camera headsets don't work, cameraperson ill,
CAMERAPERSON:
Go over shots with Director prior to taping.
Be familiar with all terms for types of shots, i.e., close up, dolly in, tilt down, etc. Keep tripod adjustments loose enough to move camera upon command with smooth movements.
Receives instructions from Director on headsets regarding which shots to line up during taping.
AUDIO PERSON:
Is responsible for ALL sound sources for production.
Sets up and tests microphones on set prior to production.
Monitors microphone levels during production.
Sets up and monitors levels from other sound sources i.e., music tape, slide chain & VTR roll-ins, etc.
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR:
(SWITCHER)
Plans with Director prior to production the order of camera shots and types of special effects that will be done during taping through the Switcher.
Executes which camera's image (or image from VTR roll-in, slide chain, etc.) will go down on tape during production, UPON THE DIRECTOR'S COMMAND. Previews all special effects for DIRECTOR prior to putting them out ON LINE.
VTR OPERATOR:
Responsible for cueing up all videotape roll-ins to be used during production.
Must be familiar with script and be ready with each roll-in.
Upon Director's command, will start tape rolling, will time each tape ~ will inform Director with a 10 second countdown that tape will fin ish.Responsible for starting Record Tape, timing program, informing Director of various time ins during taping.
CHARACTER GENERATOR OPERATOR:
Receives list of titles, credits, other information which will appear on tape during program from 3/4Producer or Director.
Programs all this information into the Character Generator - size and typestyle, color of letters ~ background may also be determined by Producer of .Director.
Upon Director's commands, instructs Character Generator to provide any page of this written information for insertion onto the program/videotape.
SET DESIGNER:
Works with Producer ~ Director prior to production to arrange all set elements.
Coordinates colors, textures, etc. of all set elements, including skin tones and clothing colors of talent ~ guests.
Works with Lighting Designer to light set.
Responsible for striking set after production.
LIGHTING DESIGNER:
Works with Producer, Director ~ Set Designer to arrange lights to illuminate set elements ~ to convey mood of program.
Must be sensitive to skin tone and clothing colors of talent ~ guests in order to light them properly.
MAKEUP/ COSTUME DESIGNER:
Works with Producer, Director,-Scriptwriter prior to production as to which talent/guests require costumes, makeup.
Applies makeup to all talent/guests in ardor to prevent wash-out affect due to TV lights.
Must be sensitive to colors & textures of talent & guests clothing and change it if necessary.
GRAPHICS DESIGNER:
Prepares any art materials for production:~ hand-lettered or illustrations, photos, charts, graphs, other V-dimensional art.
Works with Director, Set Designer ~ Lighting Designer to set up art work.
ENGINEER:
Responsible for turning on all electronic studio equipment and making sure it is working properly prior to production.
EDITOR:
May tighten up already recorded program, possibly' adding music, voiceover, roll-ins, intro., outro., titles, credits, etc., if necessary. Edits together various parts of a production that have previously been taped separately.
May re-assemble a taped production into a new order.
Works closely with Producer to prepare Edit Script
