Saltzman, English Girls
Win over Classical
By Matthew Roy , The Daily Item of Lynn, Monday,

SALEM
- It might not have been played in its usual setting, but the Classical-English
Powerpuff game still had its emotion and big plays. But no one had a better day
that English running back Georgia Saltzman.
Saltzman carried 28 times for 114 yards and all three English touchdowns as the
Bulldogs claimed the Ierardi/LeTour Trophy for the fourth straight year after a
dominating 20-0 win over the Rams at Bertram Field.
"It was an overall team performance. These girls worked so hard and it was
a great team effort," English coach Chris Carroll said.
Things didn't get off to an auspicious start for English as Classical's Yana Ros
picked off a Carolyn Kapoll pass on the first drive of the game. The Rams
couldn't turn the turnover into points as three plays lost six yards, forcing a
punt.
Saltzman got the English crowd going when she took the first play of the next
drive and went 68 yards down the sideline for a touchdown, but an illegal block
wiped the points off the board. That proved to be no problem for the Bulldogs,
as they called Saltzman's number on the next three plays before she bolted 33
yards in a carbon copy of her first carry for an 8-0 lead after a 2-point
conversion.
Classical continued to struggle on offense, failing to gain a yard on its next
drive. English got the ball on its own 30 and played keep away for the next nine
minutes.
Capoll moved English into scoring range with a pair of completions to Brandy
Sucharewicz before turning back to the ground game. Saltzman and company moved
the ball inside the Classical 10 before the Rams came up with a big goalline
stand when Sucharewicz dropped a sure touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal from the
10, keeping it an 8-0 game at halftime.
"We just couldn't get them off the field," Classical coach
Barbara Greer said. "Their offense controlled most of the game."
Classical got the ball to start the second half and had to punt again. English
got the ball on the Rams 30 and Saltzman didn't waste much time in picking up
where she left off in the first half. Two runs had the ball on the one and a
third gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead.
"Georgia is such a great athlete and a great leader. That's why she was one
of my captains," Carroll said.
The English defense continued to keep the Rams offense in neutral, forcing
two more punts by the end of the third quarter. Late in the third, English began
driving towards the knockout blow.
Yet when it looked like the Rams were going to come up with a huge stop early in
the fourth, English burned them again when Sucharewicz took an inside handoff
and bolted 37 yards to the house for a 20-0 lead with nine minutes left.
With the game firmly in hand, it was up to the English defense to preserve the
shutout and that's exactly what it did. Twice in the final six minutes, the Rams
reached the 30 yard line but came away with nothing to show for the drives.
