A Visit to The Grand Army of the Republic Museum

By Matt Ierardi & Mac St Ives

Our time at the Grand Army of the Republic Museum was a very eye-opening experience. Our Social Studies teacher, Mr. Poland, arranged the field trip. The tour we were given was presented by Bob Mattihas and Dexter Bishop.

On our trip, we were joined by Mayor Judy Kennedy. The Mayor gave us some background on how the City came to own the Hall.

It seems that as the last of the Civil war veterans were dying off they deeded the Hall to the City so it would be preserved for future generations.

The meeting room upstairs has been preserved just as it was when the Civil War veterans left it.

The museum is considered to be a hidden gem of Lynn due to the fact that it has many historical items from various time periods in United States history.

The most Interesting part of the tour to us was the aspects of warfare displayed amongst the multiple rooms in the facility. Mac and I Especially liked the Uniform Room because it presented a wide Variety of weaponry and war uniforms worn in that time frame. Also, we learned about many types of warfare during the Civil War.  Overall, the experience was most enjoyable.

We expect to go back in the spring and work with the LCHS Video Production Department as well as the experts at the Grand Army of the Republic Museum and set up an interactive video tour of the Museum. Look for news on this site for the premiere demonstration of our new tour. We hope you can find time in your lives to visit this historical and memorable place.
