John Steinbeck’s World: A WebQuest

Introduction

John Steinbeck achieved worldwide recognition for his keen observations and strong social commentaries about life during the Great Depression in the Salinas Valley (Central Valley) in California.

Your job will be to create a group brochure to present to your classmates about the life and times of John Steinbeck to help them understand the historical significance Of Mice and Men, and why John Steinbeck is considered such an important American novelist.

Task

You will collect a variety of information to create a brochure of graphics and written information to introduce your classmates to: John Steinbeck, The Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt, The New Deal, and The Central & Salinas Valleys. Through an oral presentation, you will present the items included in your brochure and make the era during which John Steinbeck lived come alive.

Process

The class will be divided into teams of 4 people. You will be researching the following areas: The Great Depression, John Steinbeck, Steinbeck Country (The Salinas and Central Valley), Franklin D. Roosevelt and The New Deal. Each group will:

Develop and assemble a brochure.

Answer the questions in each section by organizing information into coherent, well- organized paragraphs.

Include graphics (maps, drawings, pictures, charts etc.) to explain your answers.

As a group, choose two photographs* from the links provided for each section to include your report. Tell why you chose them and what the photographs show.

*Note: You will have to answer specific directed questions for The Great Depression photographs. Your group will be able to freely choose from the other sections (John Steinbeck, the Salinas and Central Valley, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and The New Deal).

Present an oral group presentation of your findings (between 5-6 minutes for each participant).

Include a list of sources (bibliography) developed by your group to include on the back of the brochure. The bibliography must include at least 4 Internet sources and 3 books that were used in the group's research.
