After 30 Straight Regular Season Wins, Lady Rams Fall to Fenwick
By: Ashley Donovan, LCHS Internet Reporter

Last Sunday, January 16th, the 2005 Lady Rams fell to Fenwick for their first regular season loss in 30 straight games.
The first half was a battle between two great defensive teams, as we held Fenwick to 20 points and they held us to 21 points.
However, it was not just Fenwick's defense that kept us to 21points, but our offensive game was a little off throughout the
entire game. At halftime, both teams went into the locker rooms sweating from an intense first half, as we held the lead by 1
point. The second half began, and both teams knew that whoever started the half off strong, would most likely come out
on top. Fenwick went on a 8-0 run, and the Lady Rams were down by 7. Throughout the rest of the entire second half the Lady Rams struggled to come back, but never succeeded. In the end, we lost by 10.
Overall, the game was lost in the second half by a lack of defense and missed foul shots (we were 4 for 14 from the line).
However, in the end, the Lady Rams came out a little wiser and as a stronger team knowing that we have to show up everyday, for every game, for every practice, no matter what. This loss taught all of us a valuable lesson.

Classical Girls Hoop Team Remains Unbeaten after Win over Marblehead
By Christian Mielcarek / For The Daily Item of Lynn,  Saturday, January 15, 2005

LYNN -- The Lynn Classical girls came into Marblehead confident they could extend their season opening winning streak.
Their confidence was rewarded.
Wasting no time building themselves a substantial advantage, the Rams built a 10-0 lead before Marblehead had its first field goal. And even though the Magicians made a late run, they never got closer then seven, as Classical extended its perfect record to 8-0, winning 40-33.
From the beginning of the game, it was obvious that no player on the Magicians could match the quickness of Classical small forward Taneka Brown.  "Taneka played an outstanding game," Classical coach Gene Constantino. "She did everything".
Brown scored 10 points, grabbed four rebounds and two steals before the first half ended.
Pushing the ball, combined with the outside shooting of captain Ashley Donovan, the Rams staked themselves to a 10-point lead at intermission.
Marblehead (1-3; 2-4), which started the season playing five conference teams with a combined record of 38-5, fought hard to get back in the game. With 12 minutes remaining in the second half, the Magician's lost their best player when captain Ashara Carrington left the game with what appeared to be an ankle injury.
Fellow captain Keila Cashman and the Marblehead ladies stepped up after the injury.
Cashman hit her final five shots, ending with 11, and Carrington eventually returned with a few minutes remaining but Marblehead was never able to get closer then three baskets.
"We hung in their real well," said Marblehead coach Jeff Newhall. "We played seven minutes without our best player.
"We made our run when she was out," Newhall said. "It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if she was still in there (at the time she left, she'd scored a team-leading 15 points). "Even though we lost, we can take a lot from this game".
Another major key to Classical victory was the Lady Rams' domination of the glass. They outrebounded Marblehead 40-22.
"We knew we had to control the boards," Constantino said, "especially when they forced us to slow our game down in the second half. Our guards made some outside shots which was very nice".
Taneka Brown finished the game with 14 points, 9 rebounds and four steals. While Ashley Donovan handed in a solid performance with 7 points, 8 rebounds and three assists.
Classical will defend their perfect record on Sunday at Bishop Fenwick.
Lady Ram Start Off Season Strong
Reported by Ashley Donovan   ( #23 )  ...     1/11/05
The 2004-2005 Lady Rams have started the season out strong as
we brought in another win tonight over Salem to make our record 7-0
(5-0 NEC). At first, our defense could not step up to the challenge of
Salem's intense offensive play (Salem scored the first 6 points of the
game) but eventually we caught on to their excellent outside shooting
and strong driving to the basket as Coach made the right defensive
changes to stop them. Throughout the entire first half the game was
tight. Salem kept the lead for most of the half until the final two minutes
when the Lady Rams' defense woke up, made a couple of steals, and took
the lead, ending the half 3 points ahead. At this point of the game, it was
obvious that defense was the key to winning this game.
The second half began just as the first half had mapped out, a tight struggle between both Salem and Classical. However, this time both teams were playing excellent defense, but neither team could score. The score was back and forth the whole half, Salem up by two points, Classical up by 2 points,
Salem and Classical tied. No one was leaving this court with one single
ounce of energy left in them. It was time to crank up the heat, and leave
it all on the floor, and that is exactly what we did. With about 7 minutes
left in the game, the Lady Rams decided that there was no way they
were going to let tbe Witches come out with a win in their home gym.
The Lady Rams scored 10 straight points in a row off of excellent
defensive play and steals. This brought the Rams to a 10 point lead with
about 4 minutes left. Throughout the rest of the half, Salem gave their
best effort to try and come back, but they could not accomplish their
goal. In the end, the Lady Rams won 50-41.
Ultimately, defense won the game for Classical. The forwards,
Tonisha Tate and Irene Saranteas, definitely stepped it up on offense as
they showed their talented post moves down low. The guards, also
stepped up when it came to defense as we held their leading scorer to 0
points in the second half. However, overall, Lynn Classical's Lady
Rams know that tonight's win had nothing to do with individual play. It
was a total TEAM effort.

Classical Girls Defeat English to win Boverini Basketball Tourney
By Jonathan Weiner, The Daily Item of Lynn  Thursday, December 30, 2004

The Lynn Classical girls basketball team may not have any seniors (and just one returning starter) on this year's squad, but the Rams have the experience in how to win.
Last night, they took advantage of a foul-stricken Lynn English squad, breaking open a close game late in the first half to take a 49-24 triumph - as well as the inaugural Walter Boverini Christmas Tournament title at Lynn English.
Classical remains unbeaten at 4-0, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-4.
Both teams traded baskets throughout the beginning of the first half, though the Rams failed to register a field goal until almost four minutes were played. Classical took its first lead (6-4) when guard Ashley Donovan drained a three-pointer from just outside the right key.
The Bulldogs found themselves in foul trouble early, forcing them to play the final ten minutes without center Jessica French. She had scored six of English's first eight points, but picked up her second foul at that juncture.
"I thought we'd save her for the second half," explained English coach Kathy Bonnevie. "(Classical center Tonisha) Tate was on the bench in foul trouble, so I thought it'd even out. A lot of our players had picked up two, and (guard) Midori (Keefe) had three on her; we don't have a deep bench, so that made it tough to substitute."
Yet even with French on the bench, English still found itself in a ballgame. Forward Tiara Bingham tied the game at 10 midway through the half on a short jumper. The Bulldogs only found themselves behind 14-12 late in the half (thanks to another Bingham bucket) before Classical netted the last 12 points of the period.
The Rams hit five straight free throws, including a pair when Bonnevie picked up a technical with just a little more than two minutes remaining. Donovan (12 points) closed the scoring with another three-pointer right before the buzzer for the 26-12 halftime edge.
"Once French picked up her second (foul), that was the key," said Classical coach Gene Constantino. "We started playing defense like we know we can, and we ran the ball. English did a good job rebounding in the first half, and they were preventing us from getting second chances on the boards. But our press worked better tonight, and our kids did a nice job on defense."
Bonnevie agreed in regards of how the fouls hurt her squad.
"We were 2-for-15 from the line," she said, "while they were something like 10-for-14 (in the first half). Those fouls (against us) just continued to build up."
Classical kept it up in the second half, netting the first 12 points to increase the margin to 38-12 with just over four minutes having been played.
Center Irene Saranteas scored seven of her 12 points (she and Donovan led the Rams with a dozen each) in the second stanza.
"She was just unstoppable in that half," added Constantino. "She was strong inside, with several rebounds."
French and Bingham contributed ten points apiece to lead the Bulldogs.

Classical's Irene Saranteas was named the tournament Most Valuable Player. Teammate Ashley Donovan, English's Jessica French, Stephanie Vasquez of St. Mary's, and Shena Mitchell of Tech made the All-Tournament team.
