Geometry Class Goes Sailing
Mr. Vigeant and Mr. Hayward have designed a new challenge for their Geometry classes. Students were told to design a sail, using paper products, that will be tested on an air propulsion sled. Many different sizes and styles were used in the trials, but keeping sail weight light, balancing evenly, and sail area low made for further distances traveled. After the test trials are finished, the classes will look at the theoretical formula and try to come to some conclusions. Here is some of the action--

This design was one of the best !
This design was also one of the best !
The second part of this unique project is to design the fan and blades for windmill testing. Understanding the formula for surface area, angle degrees, and propulsion become very important in aerodynamic planning and building of the prototypes.
