LYNN - High school cross country
may not be the largest brotherhood/sisterhood in
Lynn, but it may be among the tightest.
"It's a pretty social thing," says
Maggie Bradbury,
one of the runners on the Classical girls team. "On
most days it's fun to come to practice."
It goes deeper.
"These kids care for one another," Classical coach
Chris Hayward
said. "Earlier in the season, one of our runners had
some problems ... personal problems ... and I loved
the way our kids rallied around them."
The closeness of the group certainly did the English
boys a lot of good. The Bulldogs finished the
regular season with a 4-3 mark Tuesday after
defeating Classical, 21-34, at Lynn Woods. And that
hasn't happened since John Walsh took over as coach.
"First time in my memory," he said. "And I think
it's because all these kids hang around together all
year round, even in the summer.
"They were all up at Lynn Woods in the races all
summer long," Walsh said, "and during the season, we
like to run six days a week. And it's a supportive
group ... one that welcomes newcomers. They're kids,
but they're not mean kids. We have a very good
group."
Those who choose to run, especially in Lynn, take an
enormous amount of pride in what they did.
"It bothers me," Priscilla
Osgood of Classical said, "when people
say it's a sport that you only do because you can't
do anything else. It's not a sport for everyone. You
have to have a lot of self-discipline, and
self-motivation, to run it. It really teaches you to
reach back and push harder."
This isn't Friday night football, played under the
lights, with crowds approaching 1,000. It's Lynn
Woods on a weekday afternoon, where runners run on a
course that's so confusing that at least one of them
took an unintended shortcut and was disqualified.
And since the meets are so early in the day, not
even every parent, let alone fans, can attend.
"It was nice to see people here today," said English
co-captain Joe Gay. "Usually when we run up here, no
one else is here."
Gay is ecstatic about the winning season.
"That's a good reward for all the work we have put
into this," he said. "From the first day of the
season, that was our goal ... to have a winning
record."
But, as the runners and coaches say, cross country,
like much of track and field itself, serves a dual
purpose. You compete against teams and you compete
against yourself.
"Even in a situation as with our girls," Hayward
said, "we didn't have a very good record, but I saw
a lot of good things. And you never really lose when
you run, because a lot of the time, you're competing
against yourself, and your previous times."
English's boys finishers, in order, were Alex
Bonitto (18:13), Matthew Blaney (18:26), Peter Matu
(20:32), Tyler Comer (21:04), Ri Yan (21:18), Joe
Gay (21:45), Michael Fuentes (22:17), Emmanuel

English, Classical cross country runners
thrive despite obstacles
By
Steve Krause / The Daily Item
LYNN
-- The venue isn't Manning Field, or
either schools gym. It's Lynn Woods on
an unseasonably warm October afternoon.
The participants don't come running out
of a tunnel, or onto the floor, or ice,
to the enthusiastic cheers of a home
crowd. They more or less show up, warm
up, take their places at the starting
line, and run their three miles.
But despite the lack of fame and glory,
the cross country runners at English and
Classical all say they wouldn't think of
doing anything else.
"I like to run," says Classical's
Adam Chambers.
"I've always liked to run."
That basically sums up the attitude of
most of the runners at Tuesday's race
through the woods. The runners are
individually motivated, and the event is
low key.
Well ... almost low key. Things are
never low key when English captain
Alexander Funez is around. Funez, who
introduces himself as "Captain Funez,"
is can get loud, especially when it
comes to coaxing teammates to the finish
line after he's completed his race.
"If I have to yell to encourage a
teammate," Funez says, "I'll do that."
The runners thrive despite the fact that
the program is down - and has been for
some time.
"I don't know what it is," says
English's John Walsh. "But it was like
that when I ran at English too. I think
it's a combination of a lot of things."
Classical coach
Chris Hayward
thinks some of it has to do with the
fact there's no real glory in it for the
runners. But, he says, "it's a lot of
work. We run every day. Not everyone
wants to run three miles every day."
The ones who do have their own reasons.
Classical's
Hulerie McGuffie, for
example, made her mark last spring
running the 400 meter race at the
national championships in South
Carolina.
This is her first fall running cross
country, and she finds the experience
much different.
"I'm not used to it," she said, "so it's
harder for me. It's a different kind of
running.
"But," he said, "it keeps my legs in
shape for the 400."
"(Running) is something I do
constantly," says Funez. "The more I put
into it, the more I get out of it."
Another of English's "Big Three," Chris
Birotte, likes the way running makes him
feel.
"There is a high," he said, "when you
get into a rhythm. And it's also a great
feeling to know you're doing something
... and to know you're doing it well."
Like Chambers, Alex Bonitto just loves
to run.
"It's as if nothing else matters," he
said.
Birotte, Bonitto and Funez would finish
1-2-3 Tuesday, with another Bulldog,
Matt Blaney, finishing fourth. After
Classical's P.J.
Ryan, Chambers came in at No.
6.
Most of the race was run in the thick of
the woods, with one central spot (called
a four-way intersection) where a handful
of parents gather to cheer the runners
on. Those glimpses are fleeting. Most of
the time, the runners are alone.
They all have different ways to motivate
them.
"I think about how maybe my time can get
me into a better college," Bonitto says.
"I think about all the hard work I've
put into this," he said. "When things
get tough, I just think of all the
training and how it's paying off."
"It's just you and the course," says
Funez.
Some runners fantasize about much more.
"Sometimes," Chambers says, "you think
about winning the World Series, or
anything that'll make you keep going."
Such as running that last, victorious
lap around the track at the Olympic
marathon?
"I think about that all the time,"
Chambers says.

Classical incoming junior Hulerie McGuffie is seeking to follow up on a
strong sophomore track season that included a trip to Nationals in North
Carolina this past spring. (ITEM FILE PHOTO) |
Classical's McGuffie
transitions to greater emphasis on track
By Rich Tenorio / The Daily
Item
Following up on a standout spring track season in
which she went to Nationals in North Carolina, Lynn Classical incoming junior
Hulerie McGuffie will increase her focus on running this year.
"I accomplished a lot last year that I didn't even think I could do," McGuffie
said. "I'd like to go to Nationals again and more."
This week, McGuffie will share her knowledge with youngsters interested in track
when she helps out with a track and field clinic sponsored by Lynn Parks and
Recreation at Manning Field with fellow track athlete Rick Kimber (English).
Classical coach Ryan Hathaway and UNH coach Jim Boulanger have also helped out
at the clinic, which is free and is for boys and girls ages seven years old and
up.
This fall, McGuffie was planning on playing soccer, but decided to run cross
country instead.
"I wanted to stick with track," she said, adding that quite a few coaches had
influenced her decision.
She has run both on her own and with clinics this summer, benefiting from
several Lynn resources: Manning Field ("It's always open," she said) and the
YMCA. She runs in the morning; on Mondays and Wednesdays, her days continue as a
youth leader with the Part of the Solution program at Girls Inc. One of the
projects she is helping out with is a basketball tournament this week at Warren
Park.
She ran track as a middle-schooler at Pickering, but said she got "really
involved" in her freshman year of high school. This past spring, as a sophomore,
she placed third in her heat in the 400 in the national track and field
championships at Greensboro, NC.
"It's fun," she said. "It's a good sport, and I'm good at it."
Asked if she saw herself as more of a speed or a distance runner, she said,
"Speed," but then added, "It depends. The 400 is a mid-distance event, mostly
sprinting. I can run it in under a minute."
Her time in the event at Nationals was a 57.76. She ran a 57.4 in the
Northeastern Conference meet to qualify.

At English, a win by Johnny Long (19:16) propelled Classical (1-6) to its first
victory of the season.
Bulldog (0-7) runners Scott Guzman (25:01) and D.J. Young (25:02) finished
within a second of each other to claim second and third, but it was not enough

"This has been a great year and the boys ran great," said Bulldog

At English, the Bulldogs (1-6) took the top three spots to pick up their first
victory of the year.
"To end with a win is huge," said English coach Mike Toomey. "It
was important for the girls to get that. It's something they can take with them
that will keep them coming back."
Last season, the English girls team consisted of four runners. This year, that
number has more than quadrupled, with 19 girls joining the roster, and the
increased participation was apparent on the time sheet.
Bianca Fowler crossed the finish line first with a time of 29:52, while
teammates Nina Barane (29:55) and Sophie de Langerville (30:31) finished close
behind.
Cindy Columbus ran the best time for Classical (0-7), as she finished fourth
overall with a time of 30:48.
