Classical 4, English 1

At Breed, winning for the Rams (9-6) were Alex Rittershaus, first singles (6-3, 6-2); Eric Silva, third singles (6-1, 6-1); Ben Wheeler-Evan D'Avolio, first doubles (6-7, 7-6, 6-1); and Ryan Houde-Matt Adolf, second doubles (6-0, 6-1).

Classical 5, Salem 0

At Salem, Larry C. won 7-6, 6-0. Daveth C. won 6-0. 6-0. Ben W. and Evan D. won 6-2, 6-0. ZackO. and Chris C. won 6-2, 6-2. Alex R. won, as usual.

Beverly 3, Classical 2

At Breed, the match came down to second singles where Beverly's Greg Crane nipped Alex Rittershaus, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. The Rams (7-5) won at first doubles with Eric Silva-Ben Wheeler, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, and second doubles, with Zac Osborne-Brian Houde, 6-4, 6-4. The Rams' Daveth Cheth lost a barnburner at third singles, 4-6, 6-7.

Classical Blanks Revere

The Classical High boys tennis team upped its record to 7-4 Monday with a 4-0 win over Revere at Winchester.
The Rams had wins from Larry Cheung at first singles, 6-1, 6-3; Alex Rittershaus, second singles, 6-2, 7-6; Ben Wheeler-Eric Silva, first doubles, 6-2, 7-5; and Evan D'Avolio-Zac Osborne, 6-1, 6-0, at second doubles. The final match had to be cut short due to time constraints.

M'head 5, Classical 0

At Marblehead, the Magicians (9-0) had wins from Collin Hyte at first singles, 6-1, 6-1; Alec Eidelman, 6-0, 6-2, at second singles; and Sean O'Connor at third singles, 6-1, 6-0. Chris Conn-Kyle Benowitz won at first doubles, 6-0, 6-4, and Chris Butterfield-David Traynor won at second doubles, 6-0, 7-5.

The Rams (6-4) had strong play from Jeremy Dorson, who competed in his first varsity mach and did well despite a loss. He paired with Evan D'Avolio in second doubles.

Saugus 3, Classical 2

At Saugus, the Rams' (6-2) Eric Silva-Ben Wheeler beat Shawn Durant-Rob Snow, 6-1, 6-3 in first doubles and Zac Osborne-Evan D'Avolio won 2-6, 6-0, 7-5 over Torrin Hanlon-Bobby Raymandi in second doubles for Classical.

Saugus' Nick Bertrand beat Larry Cheung, 6-2, 6-2 in first singles; Bryan Boyajian won 6-1, 7-5 over Alex Rittershaus in second singles; and Chris DiChiara beat Daveth Cheth, 6-4, 6-3, in third singles for the Sachems.

Classical 4, G'ster 1

At Breed, the Rams' (6-1) Larry Cheung won 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 at first singles; Alex Rittershaus defeated Chris Lufkin 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at second singles; Daveth Cheth lost 6-7, 5-7 at three; Eric Silva-Ben Wheeler won at first doubles, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1; and Brian Houde-Zac Osborne won at second doubles, 6-2, 6-4.

Swampscott Stops Classical in Bout of Undefeateds           The Daily Item

The Swampscott High boys tennis team defeated Classical, 4-1, Wednesday at Breed, but the Rams, who went into the match undefeated, went down swinging.

Swampscott's Alex Hanbury defeated Larry Cheung, 6-1, 6-0, at first singles and Josh Ruskin defeated Classical's Alex Rittershaus, 6-3, 6-3, in the two spot. Classical picked up its win at third singles, with Daveth Cheth defeating Brandon Poulin, 7-5, 6-4.

The first doubles match went three sets with Swampscott's Chris Kaplan-Sam Andler defeating Ben Wheeler-Eric Silva, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. In second doubles, Scott Leffler-Jared Jacobs defeated Classical's Brian Houde-Zac Osborne, 6-4, 6-2.

Swampscott is 6-1, 5-0 Northeastern Conference and the Rams are 5-1.

Tennis Team does it Again - Against English

The Classical High boys and girls made it a clean sweep in tennis Friday, with the boys defeating English 5-0 and the girls winning 4-1. Both matches were at Breed.

In the boys match, the Rams improved to 5-0. Larry Cheung defeated Dara Chhan at first singles, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5; Alex Rittershaus defeated German Gorodovsky at second singles, 6-3, 7-5, and Daveth Cheth defeated Jose Ayala, 6-1, 6-1, in third singles.

In doubles, Eric Silva-Ben Wheeler topped Alex Bannikov-Matt Border, 6-0. 6-1, and Zac Osborne-Brian Houde defeated Travis Bacon-Gagfon Bomeo, 6-1, 6-0.

Classical Boys Win their Third Straight Match

The Classical High boys tennis team is off to a 3-0 start thanks to a 5-0 win over Salem Friday at Breed.

"A lot of kids worked hard at tennis all summer. I guess it's paying off," Classical coach Chris Hayward said.

Larry Cheung won 6-3, 6-1, at first singles; Alex Rittershaus took second singles, 6-3, 6-1, and Daveth Cheth won at third singles, 6-4, 6-3. The Rams were equally successful in doubles, with Eric Silva-Ben Wheeler winning 6-2, 6-3, and Zac Osbourne-Brian Houde winning 6-0, 6-0, in the two spot.

Alex, Daveth, Eric and Ben Provide Tennis Win over Beverly

The Classical boys tennis team had to wait until the very end, but it got a second win in the Northeastern Conference on Tuesday with a 3-2 win at Beverly.

The Rams' (3-2, 2-0 NEC) Alex Rittershaus won 7-5, 6-3 at second singles; Daveth Cheth took a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in third singles; and Eric Silva-Ben Wheeler won 6-0, 7-6 at first doubles.

Boys Earn Big Victory

It was a banner day for Classical High tennis Monday with both the boys and girls teams picking up wins for their new coaches.
In the boys game, senior Alex Rittershaus won 6-3, 6-0, at second singles; Daveth Cheth won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, at third singles; Eric Silva-Ben Wheeler won 6-4, 6-2, at first doubles; and Evan D'Avolio-Zac Osborne won 6-3, 6-0, at second doubles. Revere's point came from Steve Nguyen, who won at first singles, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

The girls, under first-year coach Kevin McDormand, squeezed past Revere, 3-2, at Winchester Indoor Tennis Club. The Rams picked up a point at first singles, with Amanda Harney winning 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-4). The first doubles team of Chelsie Osborne-Colleen Donovan won 7-6, 6-4, and Sochitta Men-Jesie Carredano pulled out a three-setter at second doubles.

McDormand took over the head coaching job for Penny Pension, who retired as head girls and boys coach last year after retiring from teaching. With girls tennis moving to the spring, two new coaches were needed. Chris Hayward took the boys team, which defeated Revere, 4-1, at Breed.
