The Big Game-Classical vs. Salem 1/20/06
What can a reporter say about a game that turned out as exciting as can be. The Classical Boys Basketball Team took on the challenge from Salem Friday night, a team with an unbeaten 9-0 record. Salem was strong and fast, but but as center Kevin Arsenault stated " We wanted it more". So Classical fought point-for-point, rebound by rebound, turnover-by- turnover, in a game that had over a dozen lead changes.
In the first half, Roberto Vellon put in 10 points, Vince Spence had 7, Berberene got 6, Jeff Watson made 5, Kevin Arsenault had 4, and Terry Thornton popped in a 2. Athletic Director DIck Ruth pointed out the tremendous hustle of Spence and Arsenault in the first half. Ruth noted "It took a great effort to knock off this unbeaten Salem team.
In the second half, Arsenault came back huge with 14 points, followed by Vellon with 7, Watson with 6 (on two big 3 pointers), Spence with 3, Thornton and Jorel Berberene with 2 each. Filling in with good defense was Quintana, Matinez, and Peter Kopoulos. Don't forget our back-up Varsity players Diamond, Joseph, Mullins, and Jackson.
Principal Warren White loved the game results and stated "A lot of great effort and perspiration went into this win. The boys deserve to celebrate this victory".
Terence Thornton had the last words. "There's a lot of competition out there, but we're shooting for the NEC (Northeast Conference) Playoffs !"
This mellifluously talented Erica Singer rolled out an outstanding National Anthem.
The coaches check out the competitors while the team 'psyches up".
" If the coach only would let us dunk ? "
