English Baseball Capitalizes
on Classical Mistakes

You can't afford to
give any baseball team extra outs in any inning. Yet that's what Classical did
last night against English, and the Bulldogs took advantage with a 7-4 triumph
at Fraser Field.
Both clubs had chances in their first at-bats, yet
came up empty. That changed in the top of the second. English designated hitter
Dave Kolozetski walked, and first baseman Chris Carroll dropped a bunt in front
of the plate. Pitcher Matt Church threw to shortstop Lymbal Guerrero covering
the bag at second, but caught the ball nowhere near the base. His attempt to get
Carroll sailed past first baseman Sean Fitzgerald to put runners on second and
third. They crossed the plate on third baseman Carlos Baez's double.
Cory Enquist beat out an infield bouncer, then
took second on a wild pitch. Jairo Valdez singled them both home to increase the
score to 4-0. English closed the scoring when Chris Cole hit a bouncer to third
baseman Sean Walleston. Walleston retired Cole with his throw, but the return
toss back by Fitzgerald flew over the base, and Valdez was allowed to score.
"We gave away too much too soon," said
Classical coach Jim Tgettis, whose Rams fall to 5-11. "The walk and error
started it, and you can't do that when you're having trouble scoring runs as
well."
English coach Joe Caponigro said, "We played
Danvers earlier in the week, and left 11 on, including several of them in
scoring position. It was a good inning for us, getting in those runners."
In the bottom of the third. English (11-5) righty
David Burke set down the first two batters, before allowing a single to catcher
Mike Chakoutis. Burke walked Guerrero, and moments later, catcher Ryan Healey
tried to pick off Chakoutis off second. The throw instead went into center
field. The throw by Enquist went over the head of Baez, and Chakoutis put the
Rams on the board. Mike Jesaroldo reached on a throwing error by second baseman
Junior Rodriguez, plating Guerrero to bring the Rams within 5-2. Jesaroldo would
be thrown out at the plate for the final out, attempting to score on Bryant
Gauthier's single. Right fielder Franly Duran's heave to home was well in time
to retire Jesaroldo.
The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth when Carroll
singled in Duran, who led the frame with a double, and extended the lead to 7-2
in the seventh when another Carroll single plated Duran. Burke got the first two
batters in the bottom of the inning, but walked the bases loaded, before being
lifted for Valdez. Church greeted him with a two-run double, bringing the Rams
within 7-4. Yet Valdez got Gauthier to fly out to end the game.
"Classical had two out and no one on, and
they battled and hustled," said Caponigro."They had the tying run at
the plate, and just never gave up. "This was Burke's first start of the
year, and he really wanted to finish. He just got too tired, but he did a lot
more than I expected him to."
