Basketball Bonds Meaghan and Ashley

Lynn Classical's Ashley Donovan and Meaghan Reddy are scholar-athletes and lifelong friends

By Cary Shuman, The Lynn Journal, March 1, 2006

Lynn Classical girls basketball coach Gene Constantino first noticed seniors Ashley Donovan and Meaghan Reddy when they were playing for the Our Lady of Assumption (OLA) School girls basketball team in the eighth grade.
“They had a Catholic League Tournament game at Classical and we watched them play and you could tell they were really good athletes,” said Constantino. “At Classical, they’ve been just great kids and a credit to the Donovan and Reddy familes,” said Constantino. “It’s been a terrific win-win situation in their four years in our program. They’re both Top-20 academically in the senior class and they’re great role models around the school.”
Donovan and Reddy and a player from Lynnfield named Shae Fitzpatrick helped those OLA teams win back-to-back state titles. The success on the court continued at Classical where the two friends have been an integral part of the program’s tremendous upward surge. There was a perfect 20-0 regular season and the program’s first Northeastern Conference championship two years ago, and the Lady Rams have accumulated more than 70 victories in four years.
But the relationship between Donovan and Reddy extends far beyond the basketball court and a lot longer than their junior high school days.
It was at the Little Theatre Pre-School where they first shared a classroom. Kindergarten and first grade followed at OLA and that’s where they first met. Most of their nine years at OLA, they were classmates.
“First grade, that’s where we met,” recalled Ashley, whose mother, Cindy, is a teacher at OLA. “Even if we weren’t in the same classes, we had lunch and recess together, and we were still best friends.”
They first connected on the basketball court in the fifth grade at OLA. “I was tall in the fifth grade, and I was the center,” said Ashley, who is 5 feet 7 inches. “Then Meaghan and I played AAU for the Cyclones and we became better players.”
Meaghan Reddy remembers their early days of hoop at OLA and the years in the Lynn Youth Soccer program. “I knew Ashley was going to be a good player,” said Reddy. “We won two state titles at OLA. We played soccer together at Classical and we even played JV softball when we were freshmen.”
Ashley Donovan has been a captain and two-year Northeastern Conference all-star, and it was her dramatic 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in a showdown vs. Gloucester that sent the game into overtime and allowed Classical go on to record a perfect 20-0 campaign in 2004. A tough loss to Andover in the Division 1 North final denied Classical a trip to TD Banknorth Garden.
“That 3-pointer was probably the best shot of my career,” said Donovan. “I’m just really lucky to be a part of Classical basketball. Coach Constantino and coach [Dennis] Baldini and coach [Tom] Sawyer have been awesome.”
Megahan Reddy, who is 5 feet 8 inches, has been a consistent frontcourt contributor to the Rams’ basketball success. And like Donovan, the Ram captain thrives in big-game situations.
Why has the friendship remained so strong through all the years?
“We’re so much alike,” said Ashley. “We play basketball. We play soccer. We live within two minutes of each other. We have similar grade point averages. We both want to go to the same colleges and go into the medical field. We both have sisters. Our parents have become close friends.”
Ashley has two younger sisters, Allison, a junior at Classical, and Amy, a sixth-grader at OLA.  Meaghan has a sister, Jillian, a sophomore at Classical, and a rising player in the Rams’ basketball program.
They hold a mutual respect for each other’s achievements and a mutual admiration.
“Meaghan has a great personality and is a great person,” said Ashley. “She’s like my sister.”
“Ashley’s a great friend,” said Meaghan. “She’s funny. She a great listener. She’s always there when I need someone to talk to. We spend a lot of time together. I’ve learned how to be a great friend from her.”
Classical Principal Warren White, who has maintained some lifelong friendships through his Hall of Fame athletic career at Classical and Eastern Michigan University, said the two seniors are respected student leaders and true scholar-athletes.
“Ashley and Meaghan are just great kids, and I’m talking on and off the court,” said White. “On the court, they have athletic ability and drive and they work hard and they’re leaders, but they have those same characteristics in the classroom and in the school. They’re real school leaders.”
Gene Constantino has been their guidance counselor as well as their basketball coach. “Teachers’ comments have been exemplary about them,” said Constantino. “They’ve worked hard to achieve their success. I think they’ve set the tone for a lot of kids coming to our school from OLA and other middle schools. They see what Ashley and Meaghan have accomplished and they realize you can get a great education at Classical and athletically they compete in a Division 1 program.”
Jillian Reddy said she’s proud of her sister and respects the friendship that Meaghan shares with Ashley.
“The first time that I remember them together is at their First Communion,” said Jillian. “It’s really like a perfect friendship because they’ve been so close for so long. I’ve gotten close to Ashley through my sister. I’m proud of Meaghan and I’m going to miss her when she leaves for college.”
Ashley Donovan and Meaghan Reddy could be college classmates this fall. Donovan has been accepted to Northeastern, Simmons, and Quinnipiac and intends to study physical therapy. Reddy has been accepted to Northeastern, Simmons, UMass/Amherst, and Salve Regina. She intends to enroll in the nursing program.
“If we don’t attend the same college, we’ll get together on breaks,” said Donovan.
“We’ll always be there for each other.”
Both young women agree sports have been an important of their lives and that their years at Classical have been memorable and rewarding.
“If you play sports, you meet so many people, and it’s good at building up your confidence,” said Meaghan Reddy. “Classical is a great school. Most of the kids in our class at OLA went to Catholic schools, but this has been the best decision that I could have made.”

McGrath Settling into Role at Trinity

from the Lynn Journal, 10/28/2005

Eric McGrath is settling into his role as a back-up quarterback for the unbeaten Trinity College football team.
The former Lynn Classical signal caller was on the sidelines in uniform at Zimman Field in Medford on October 15 for the Tufts-Trinity football game that was played in a driving rainstorm. Trinity extended its winning streak to 26 games with a 7-0 win over Tufts. The Bantams’ now-27-game winning streak is second only to USC in college football.
“I’m paying my dues and learning a lot from our two senior quarterbacks,” said McGrath.
McGrath was the starting quarterback for the Trinity sub-varsity team in a game against Bridgton Academy and did well in his first collegiate performance.
“Eric is progressing well, learning the system, and he’ll be a key player for this team in the future,” said Trinity coach Charles Lapriore. “He’s a good athlete who knows the game of football well.”
McGrath runs the scout team’s offense during practice. “I get some reps once in a while with the first team, but mostly I just run the scout team and go to film sessions,” said McGrath. We run a no-huddle, multiple-set offense so I had to learn all the signals.”
McGrath, who prepped for one year at Avon Old Farms, is taking courses in computer science, writing, and mathematics along with a freshman seminar.
McGrath said he hasn’t been able to attend any Lynn Classical games this fall. “I’ve been following them. I speak with Coach [Matt] Durgin once a week. It was good to see Classical beat Gloucester at Newell Stadium and I was happy to see them go for the [game-winning] two-pointer in overtime against Revere.”
McGrath will begin workouts for the Trinity College baseball team following the football season. McGrath is expected to be a starting left-handed pitcher for the Bantams. “I’m going to try to play two sports,” said McGrath.
Eric is the son of Pat and Sharon McGrath. He has two sisters, Kelly, a senior majoring in communications at the University of Rhode Island, and Krystal, 13.

Classical Students Show no Mercy on MCAS Tests

Melissa Suon, Vincente Gonzalez and Chris Perry each earned perfect scores on part of the MCAS tests. (Reba M. Saldanha photo)

By Jill Gadsby, The Daily Item of Lynn, Thursday, October 6, 2005

LYNN - Three Classical High School juniors whose backgrounds seemingly could not be more different clearly have one thing in common - they all aced the high-stakes MCAS test.
Athlete Chris Perry, jazz percussionist Vincente Gonzalez and history buff Melissa Suon each scored 280 on one portion of the test.
Both Perry and Suon received perfect scores on the math portion while Gonzalez scored perfectly on the English portion. Students statewide must pass both portions of the test with at least a 220 in order to receive a diploma.
"We're very proud of those students for their individual achievement," Principal Warren White said. "It certainly speaks to their effort and attitude on the test, as well as their academic excellence."
The students gave a variety of reasons for why they did well on the test.
"I didn't really try that much," Perry said. "I just knew everything, I guess. I've always been good in math. A lot of students look up to me for my math. They're always asking for help and stuff."
Gonzalez, who also scored a near-perfect 276 on the math portion, said he was motivated by his brother, Jose, who received a perfect MCAS score in 2003.
"My brother set the bar high with him getting a perfect score," he said. "He ended up at Cornell, so I just tried to follow in his path."
Suon said she was methodical when taking the test.
"I took my time, I didn't rush things and I just tried my best," she said.  Both Suon and Gonzalez said they both feel that Classical's ninth-grade MCAS preparation class helped them do better on the test.
"It definitely helped," Gonzalez said. "It showed you how the format was so you knew (ahead of time) and could just get right into it."
The students are now sitting pretty when it comes time to fill out college applications, although Perry said he doesn't have a dream school. "Whatever opens up," he said.
Gonzalez said he would be happy attending school with his brother.
"I'm looking a lot into going into political science at Cornell," he said, adding that he dreams of one day being president. "I want to mainly get my degree (here) and go back to Bolivia and run over there because (as an immigrant) it's not possible to run here."
Suon said she probably won't focus on her advanced math skills at college.
"I want to work in the medical field, so I'm leaning more toward science," she said. "I want to go to Harvard because I know they have a good medical program. I want to be a brain surgeon."
All three students are eligible to receive the Abigail and John Adams Scholarship, which waives tuition at Massachusetts state schools for students scoring in the top 25 percent on the MCAS by their junior year. By scoring in the top 10 percent, the students are also eligible to receive a $2,000 annual bonus to defray the cost of fees.
Perry said he will consider taking the state up on its offer to attend a state school.
"It's a good way just to get into college and get an education," he said.
Suon said she is also considering it.
"I would go for two years and transfer maybe to an Ivy League school to save some money," she said.
Although he'd rather attend a private school like Cornell, Gonzalez said the free tuition gives many students another option after high school.
"It's a great opportunity, whether it's right for you or not right for you," he said. "I'm not being ungrateful, but it's really not my first option. But it does open a lot of doors."
Gonzalez said he would not have received a perfect score if it weren't for the support of his teachers and his family.
"I want to thank all the teachers at Classical because they are all great - they really helped me," he said. "It's an honor to represent Classical and Lynn and the Gonzalez family."
